Avatar was worth seeing in 3D because James Cameron had an actual vision of what 3D could do and be. Sadly, no one else has shared that vision, and I actively avoid the 3D experience if at all possible.
(Avatar was not a particularly good movie, and I objected to the gender and race fail of it, but it was impressively pretty.)
The questions we ask ourselves before going to a 3D movie:
Was the 3D added in post-production AND it is not animated CGI? Yes? Skip the 3D and see the normal one. Does the movie seem to have enough action that the 3D will be worth paying extra money? No? Skip the 3D and see the normal one. Has it gotten bad reviews? Yes? Skip the 3D and see the normal one ON CHEAP NIGHT.
What we've discovered is that unless the action is going to come toward you, 3D doesn't make a big impact. When I saw Avatar, the 3D was great in making the world come alive. In Harry Potter 7 part 2, the 3D was ok, but nothing really happened that made me go "ooh, that was cool because of 3D". For example, if they'd showed a wand fight with spells coming toward you - great. However, they wasn't. Stuff was blown away from the audience or into the sky. I would have loved to see the Harry Voldemort battle over their shoulders, with the spells coming right at me and being deflected.
I agree, that WOULD have been cool to see. As it was, the snow looked sort of neat and the ashes during battle were, uh, dimensional. Big whoop.
As for Fright Night, I was really looking forward to it. David Tennant! Anton Yelchin! Silly vampire movie!
But all is not lost. I have eight pounds of ginger suck-baby (Finn) on my chest and Horrible Bosses is is on at the cheap theatre in a couple of hours.

I haven't yet seen a 3D movie that gained anything by having been filmed in that format.
