This has really been pissing me off recently. Near enough every person I've met and spent more htan 5 minutes talking to has used the word "gay" as a synonym for "stupid" or "annoying

One of the girls who lived on my floor last year would just come back with things like "Really? Would you rather have bought a heterosexual television? I don't think it's trying to flirt with you either way" which she said did occasionally make people stop and think about what they were saying.

I think you just have to brave it and speak up about it. Few of them will have even given thought to the implications of using the word "gay" as a negative and, given that they are presumably generally nice people, they'll apologise and make an effort to stop. And if any of them *are* aware that it's not acceptable, they are those who need to be confronted about it the most (and you shouldn't feel guilty of self-conscious about challenging them).

i've always thought it extremely rude of people to say that even before i fully understood the implications - just their attitude, not even the words they were saying. you ever notice that most of the kind of people that use 'gay' as an insult have this ...disrespectful sort of personality in general? perhaps that's just my experience.
