A cycle of prosperity and decline holds Tethe'alla in it's thrall. The world flourishes for a time, before sinking into a depression. When the world is in decline, only the Chosen One can reverse the situation and restore stability to the planet once again. To do this, the Chosen must undertake a series of perilous challenges and trials on a long and gruelling pilgrimage, before sacrificing their own life for the sake of their world and all who dwell in it.
Zelos Wilder is the present Chosen One for the planet Tethe'alla, borne of the previous Chosen and a beautiful woman who was deemed a good match for preserving the all-important bloodline. Zelos' parents had no relationship to speak of, and seemed to hold little love for their child. His father took a mistress before his untimely death, and a bastard sibling, Seles, was born. Seles' mother was a half-elven woman who wanted her own child to be the Chosen One in Zelos' place, and so one snowy day attempted to assassinate a young Zelos. It was, instead, Mylene Wilder who was struck and slain, telling her son he should never have been born before she died in the blood-soaked snow.
Zelos and Seles had been friends. However, after her mother had been executed for her heinous crime, Seles was sent to live under house arrest in a abbey far to the south. From that day on, believing his younger half-sister could only resent him for all that had happened, the siblings relationship became tense and strained, the familial love they still bore one another lost between façades.
From this young age, Zelos was raised by his butler Sebastian. Living as the Chosen was considered by onlookers to be a perfect life - Zelos owns a grand mansion, and his innumerable servants tend his every need. Noblemen and women flocked to his side, offering friendship and gifts, while their daughters blushed and tried to catch his attention any way they could. But after that day in the snow, Zelos grew ever more cynically mature, and he saw through all such fake concern. The nobles wanted only to be associated to the Chosen, the girls cared only for his pretty face and prettier money. They would accept his reflex smiles and make no effort to see further, and so Zelos quickly grew accustomed to playing false.
As the second most powerful man in the currently flourishing kingdom, both the Church and the Royal Family considered Zelos to be a threat to their stability. Left without family or allies, Zelos isolated himself in plain sight - easy smiles and charming courtesies masked the hatred he felt for everything around him and, moreso, the hatred he felt toward himself. Zelos played up to a persona of being a foolish playboy, interested only in the charms of women and shirking all responsibilities - all the while trying desperately to find some way out of the life he so despised.
Sometime in his teenage years, Zelos was approached by an organization who called themselves Cruxis, and through them he learned many truths. Chosen who completed the World Regeneration ritual were supposed to become empty vessels to house the soul of Martel, who was no true Goddess as the Church believed but instead the long-dead sister of Cruxis' obsessed leader. Cruxis controlled everything, and it was Cruxis who offered him release from his position as the Chosen of Mana. Co-operate, and Seles would become the Chosen instead, just as both siblings had always desired. Zelos accepted the proposal, no more fond of Cruxis than he was of anything else, but determined to escape his chains by any means.
He also cast his lot in with a group known as the Renegades, an anti-Cruxis organization secretly run by a high-ranking member of Cruxis itself. Zelos didn't know which side would ultimately triumph, but he was quite willing to deceive both and side with the eventual victor when the time came. When a third group appeared, a rag-tag group of adventurers from the world known as Sylvarant, Cruxis sent Zelos to infiltriate the party as a spy. Zelos did as bid, and found himself monitoring Lloyd Irving and his friends - could it be these travellers who proved the strongest?
It didn't seem at all likely. Lloyd was a bumbling, idealistic fool, and the others followed him all the same. And yet, the more he travelled with them, the more Zelos found himself becoming slowly drawn toward the ideals of which Lloyd spoke. The boy was hopelessly naïve, and yet he seemed to carry an odd, insightful wisdom. More than that, Lloyd seemed to earnestly pay attention to him, to notice things that all his life had never been noticed before. Lloyd didn't overlook him, and before long Zelos found his regard for Lloyd changing into something tangible and genuine. Lloyd was honest, and passionate, and saw him not as 'the Chosen' but as an individual.
Finally, a time arrived when all needed to be revealed. Zelos was to show his true colours, unveil himself as the traitor in their midst, and leave them to their fate. Yet, knowing what lay ahead the next day, Zelos found himself confiding in Lloyd. Amidst the sharp snows of the town of Flanoir, Zelos related the painful details of his past, his own misgivings, and silently made up his mind.
The next day, he turned his back on his friends. Yet his betrayal, though genuine for so long, was this time feigned. Zelos returned at the pivotal moment, choosing to side not with “the strongest”, but instead with the side he believed in. The party forgive him, and together they overcome the odds and save their worlds. Zelos remains at their side, making a noble gesture of sacrifice to protect Lloyd and, finally, agreeing to travel with the other on a second journey to collect the remaining Exspheres.
Which brings us to the present day.
