Since my last GIMP tutorial was such a resounding success, I felt inspired to do a second.
I was actually trying to do something similar to my Padme icon in GIMP. Didn't quite get it right, but I like what I got.
We'll be going from

Tutorial 07: Starbuck
Step 1: Choose an image and resize to 100x100.
-- With your image open in GIMP, go to to File>New and open a new blank image, 100x100. Then go back to your original image, copy it and paste into the 100x100 base that you just made. You'll end up with part of her mouth taking up the whole icon, but don't worry. Now go to Layer > Scale Layer on the image window. Resize it to anything between 75-20 percent, depending on the image. For Kara, I used 20 %. Then just take your move tool and slide the resized image over until you have something you like.
Step 2 Sharpen. Filters>Enhance>Sharpen. Play with the controls until it looks right. I used a setting of 33.
Step 3:Layer Enhancements
Duplicate your base three times.
Set the first to screen at 100%
Set the second to screen; lower opacity to around 60%. Raise or lower the opacity on this depending on how dark your base is to start with.
Set the third to soft light at 100.
Step 4: Copy visible.
Go to Edit>Paste Into. The copied image will now appear as a floating selection, and it looks strange. Either hit the New Layer button in your layer box or go to Layer>new and it will become its own layer.
Set to Multiply at 41.8 percent.
Step 5: Duplicate the multiply layer.
Change the layer mode to soft light.
Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur with vertical and horizontal radius both set to 5.0
Step 6: Duplicate the blurred layer.
Change the layer mode to burn.
Lower the opacity to about 22 %
Step 7:Duplicate your base layer.
Drag it to the top and set to Hard Light at 100 %
Erase Kara's face.
Step 8: Copy visible.
Repeat the directions in Step 4, only this time set to Overlay at 100.
Step 9 Using the blur tool, lightly go over the subject's face, avoiding the eyes and lips.
Step 10 Copy and paste this texture as a new layer:
between The hard light layer and the overlay layer.
--From here on, assume that all textures will be stacked between the Hard light and the overlay layer.--
Set the texture layer to Overlay at 100% and erase over the subject's face.
Step 11 Take this texture:
and set to screen at 83.6%.
Step 12 Take this texture:
Set to Multiply at 88.5 %
Reposition it so that most of it is off the subject, then use your blur tool and eraser on the edge until you have it the way you want it.
Step 13:Add this texture:
Again, set to Overlay at 100 %. but leave it directly over the subject. Erase around the head and neck and neck and then apply the soften brush.
Step 14: One final texture. I know, maybe I went a little overboard with these, but it's my favorite set.
Set to Darken Only at 94.3 %
Erase very carefully around the metal part where Kara's helmet would connect to the suit, and erase over her cheek, eye, and forehead, but leave the rest of the texture intact.
Step 15 : Copy Visible
Repeat the directions in step 4.
Reposition the layer over to the left
Set to soft light. Depending on how it looks you may need to lower the opacity a bit, or you can try different layer modes to find something you like..
Flatten the image and use the blur tool to soften the edges around the second image.
--sorry, I don't have an example for this step…thunderstorm hit in the middle of writing the tut and I had to get off the comp really fast. At some point, I'll go back and re-do it--
Step 16: The border.
Create a new layer and flood fill with whatever color or gradient you want.
Select>all
Select>Shrink by 2 px
Select>Feather by 5 px
Edit>cut.
Step 17: Embellishments
You're basically done at this point. I added
and set to screen in the top corner. Lower the opacity a bit if it's too bright, and an X brush that I think I got from
yumei_k if I'm not mistaken, but use your own judgement with this kind of stuff. I very rarely use the same brushes and stuff that a tutorial writer does.
