I picked up Orsinian Tales in middle school, a few months after I read the Earthsea trilogy. At the time, I didn't think of them as not being fantasy (which is now think is accurate), just as being a really minimal form of fantasy, where the only difference from the real world as that the place was made up. I know what you mean about that fantasy-like mood of regret--that made an impression too.

But I've never read Malafrena, so I'm curious to hear what you think of it!

Yeah, the copy I have has the same design as the Earthsea books had back in the '80s, which I guess sold some books but probably also resulted in some confused readers.

I am also curious what I will think of Malafrena. Watch this space! :-)

That faux-Earthsea cover threw me, too. I suppose I could give the book another shot, but it didn't really grab me when I had it next to the bed for pre-sleep reading.
