52. A Red Death by Walter Mosley.

53. White Butterfly by Walter Mosley. The strongest so far of the Easy Rawlins books. Again, opens about five years after the events of the previous story; Mosley keeps the reader off-balance by telling us right away that Easy is now married, then not showing or explaining her for the first four chapters, by which time it's already clear that there's something wrong in the relationship. Easy's involvement with the police investigation of a serial murderer serves as an excuse to avoid his marital problems, and the interplay of the two subplots makes for some emotionally wrenching stuff.
