The Carpet Makers by Andreas Eschbach, translated by Doryl Jensen. I don't know how to talk about this book without giving far too much away, so I will just say this: this is an astonishing book. A collection of short, interconnected pieces, mysteries unfolding from inside of mysteries, ever-expanding in scope but always terribly human. I remember people talking about this translation when it first came out, and deservedly so. I hope that someone will translate more of Eschbach's work, and soon.
