This year, I have two New Years wishes. The first is to see my five year old nephew Kai, his family moved to Hawaii last summer. I miss seeing the world through a child's innocent eyes, I'm definitely more jaded and lessened because of it. Also, *all* the troops returning from Iraq. Unfortunately, at least only one of those has a chance of happening.
Other than that, for me, the new year is starting out of the gate with the speed of light. The insurance company totaled my car and the check is sitting right in front of me. The apartments I manage are finally about to leveled and turned into condos. I expect that next week I'll be negotiating a settlement to move. A new ride and space, that's going to be a big change for the everyday.
As we all head towards to our own inextricably slow decomposition and 2006 begins to fade away, we say goodbye to musicians Arthur Lee, Syd Barrett, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Buck Owens, Vince Welnick, Billy Preston, Desmond Dekker, Gerald Levert and Freddy Fender. Baseball players Kirby Puckett and Buck O'Neill. Basketball coach Red Auerbach. Sportscaster Curt Gowdy. Civil rights campaigner Coretta Scott King. Entertainers Shelley Winters, Chris Penn, Lou Rawls, Red Buttons, Darren McGavin, Mike Douglas, Glen Ford, Steve Irwin, Jack Palance, Don Knotts, Jack Warden and Bruno Kirby. Financial thief Kenneth Lay. Newscaster Ed Bradley. President Gerald Ford. Writers Mickey Spillane and Peter Benchley. Feminist Betty Friedan. Sadly, every year the list gets longer.
Here's hoping this next year is better than the last. There were a few good moments, but as San Diego has become gentrified with apartments/homes remodeled into condos and vacation villas, it's become a lot harder making a go of things as the price of *everything* has risen.
Outside of all that pleasantness - Happy New Years, everyone! May 2007 bring you all that you wish for.
