Both throw away their dignity for the lulz, but with Sooyoung I think "She's got guts! <3" and with Sunny I think "What a pro! <3"

Indeed, except that with Sooyoung, I sometimes think "Guts, but why, kid, why?" I don't think that attention to be had at any cost. Leave me something attractive to pimp you with, Sooyoung! (I think I'm in the minority on this issue, though. Perhaps this is why I always feel closest to Tiffany, especially in her manager!fany mode.)

Except that kind of guts, regardless of how unattractive the result may be, is something that I value. I'm not looking for standard idol appeal, and that's why I usually end up biased for underdog members. If you think about it, underdog members are underdog members because they can't capture enough of the general idol fan demographic, which means that either they're sub-par on the usual appeal points and/or they work better on unusual appeal points.
And for someone like the me, the more unusual appeal points the better.

Sooyoung is just a great comedian. Her jokes and quips are always surprisingly on point.. (as recently as that Gaga photoshoot interview.. and then the Dior one before that. I love how people mistook her comments for serious boosting).

She's definitely got a great sense of timing - I think I like the zingers she throws out in the midst of conversation more than the gags she comes up with/forced to do.

(SNSD fans or non-SNSD fans? I wish there was a way to see how popular the members not part of the Big Four/Five are amongst other Kpop fans...) I wonder if that helps her though - I mean, some of us see it and think she's awesome, but others may be turned off by it. But then again, there's people like Gyuri and Heechul who are forever arrogant but also extremely popular.

Just the regular allkpop crowd. Maybe fans as well, I don't know, but some people were all 'well _I_ think Krystal's prettier'.

The funny and sad thing is that "talent" as Kpop defines it -- imitations, works on the basis that the imitator is recognized for who they imitate. That is, it's meant for rookies to gain recognition by imitating more popular people.(This also applies for learning idol dances) However, SNSD has hit it big so them doing imitations is almost a step down.
I always liked Sooyoung's non-explicit imitation "talents" like the home-shopping announcer(rather than a celebrity) better anyhow, and when I realized that in Kpop talent=imitation my respect for the home-shopping increased since it is an unconventional talent.
Mmmm, conversation zinger ftw. Sootae dialogue is the best for this. Dual-silvertongue timing <3

Just the regular allkpop crowd.

Although, that's a pretty specific compliment beyond the usual Soosica flattery. Jessica must have shown some insecurity at some point about her little sister's popularity.

I blabbed on about my meta-reasons for liking Sunny here earlier, how I'm most comfortable stanning someone who's clearly comfortable playing the idol game etc etc. Which could just be translated into 'because she's cool'.

I've been thinking about when Sunny's at her best - ie in what environment she thrives. How can we make her as badass as she is on IY all the time? On talk shows she's just as likely to zone out as she is to own the stage, until she sees an opportunity and seizes it, of course. For each release making SNSD bigger than before they're less likely to be permanent members of anything, so she needs to kick ass without having that semi-host role. Which is a shame, because one thing I desperately want to see is more of her radio dj'ing.

example of 'seizing the opportunity'

how I'm most comfortable stanning someone who's clearly comfortable playing the idol game etc etc.Askbask, you made me think about how HyoYeon is not only the complete opposite of this, but that my fan attraction to HyoYeon means that although I fell for her initially because I liked her dancing, that initial admiration meant that I had to accept other parts of her personality in order to be her fan ( ... )

I think you can be as much a fan of someone as anyone without liking everything about the person, but I don't think a 'true fan' exists. People who flaunt a term like that will probably demand that you accept anything your idol does or leave the fandom. In some cases I'm a huge fan without knowing about most of the polygon's points.

Did you 'accept' those parts, though? Did you dislike her being a terrible idol at first before warming to it? Or was it in fact an immediate charm, something that separated her in your books.

Sunny and Hyoyeon being opposites, probably... but it's not like that means my views on Hyoyeon are the opposite of Sunny. I like Hyoyeon's lack of idol-ness as well. What I DO have a problem with is certain marketing strategies where idols are sold as the 'girl next door', or average, friendly girls or 'innocents' or whatever. They should bloody well be on my computer screen for a reason. I don't want a camera installed at my neighbour's flat, and I don't want to see them on stage.

Interesting wording. This implies that before Hyo you'd prefer a non-terrible idol. But as askbask points out, did Hyo being a terrible idol actually endear her more to you than if she was savvy? Yuri's more savvy than Hyo, but was that why you preferred Hyo over Yuri?

As I said to R above I prefer the "terrible" idols, but SooSun provide an interesting case in that the two of them are savvy, but too savvy, especially Sunny. And a look at my other biases reveals that while I do like the girls that do batshit crazy and funny things, my biases tend to ultimately lie with girls that play with the usual idol concepts instead, such as Gyuri and Sayumi. So, like askbask, I like the girls who are comfortable with gaming the system more than the usual "terrible" idols. Hmmm. In those cases, especially with Sayumi, I can then "accept" when they're acting all cutesy and girly because I know that they're actually sending it up at some level. So in contrast to grey, I have to ( ... )
