To ship celebrities together seems to be the opposite of wanting to possess the idol for oneself.
Maybe this is why so many slash ship -- they can enjoy the interactions and fantasize away while, perhaps subconciously, feeling that there's little chance it will turn into a real relationship or make 'their' idol unavailable. Although that theory is taken for a test when delusional fans go "Key looks sad! it must be because of Jong" after the recent revelations. Perhaps they truly do believe..
Those are good points. What are the motivations for the shippers insisting their their pairing is REAL and are HetIsEw fans? For just HetIsEw, I could chalk it up to lazy writing and they don't know anyone outside of their group bubble so Matchmaker Instinct says pair everyone in the group together, but then some of them are insistent that Royal Family is IT and I don't understand what they get out of it. Maybe source of imagined melodrama to eat popcorn to?
Had to youtube royal family! That's interesting and slightly comical that they ship a threesome. More is merrier? Easier to accept that a fave can grope a little to the left and a little to the right if they make a concept out of it? The video showed the girls playing a long a little "I want to be the wife" etc... But at that point why not go all the way and just imagine dorm orgies going down with everyone involved?
Wait.. is Yoona permanently 'the child' in this ship? Is that what they mean with 'family'? What's the fun in that, it doesn't even make sense! I don't get what purpose adding Yoona to the mix serves then.
Lolwat? No, it's not a threesome. XD It's Yulsic, TaeFany, and Yoonhyun, with Yoona as Yulsic's child and Seohyun as TaeFany's. *rolls eyes* Although these "family trees" are common in idol shipping. I don't get it either. I'm guessing it's a way to explain and enjoy Yoonyul's shippy interactions without 'threatening' Yulsic. "Oh, they're just being affectionate like family, not lovers!" *rolls eyes again*
But at that point why not go all the way and just imagine dorm orgies going down with everyone involved? OT9 + mirror, askbask, OT9 + mirror. XD
i'd be very, very interested in what the reaction of those fangirls (or fanboys) would be if say key turned up and said he was in love with jonghyun, if the shippers found out that their slash ship was in fact real. because if i try to understand it, they enjoy the slash shipping only because they like/love/whatever both parties involved. never mind not being a member of SHINee, shin se kyung is presumably an unknown entity. so what if jonghyun was in a relationship with taemin or onew instead. or another boyband, but say a rival boyband that the shippers disliked. what if in the wondergeneration rivalry heyday, say yuri and yeeun or whoever said they were in a relationship. i feel like i can't take much of a pot at these questions without knowing what it would be like in these situations. most fans are of one mind when it comes to this; i wonder how much division there would be.
On the one hand, Taewoo said that idols ended up dating other idols often because they hung out with each other sharing similar schedules and meeting on the same music or variety shows, but on the other hand you mentioned how ShinSeKyung is an unknown entity for Shinee shipping.("I didn't see that one coming!" XD) Perhaps they got together precisely because it wasn't "to be expected"? In contrast to Taecyoon or Taesu.
Also, I suspect it would be like how most resolved ships that become official go: the shipping movement spazzes for a while, and then loses interest. It's all about the anticipation, after all. Look at how quickly WGM dumped it's in-reality celebrity couples for its regular are-they-or-aren't-they idol couples. That forbidden fruit/star-crossed aspect is what's really interesting.
lmfao, i love that name. :p see i had thought about that, but i was thinking from the perspective of a fan of only one group, who legit didn't like or hated the other one. if it's a single piece of fiction or a show where two characters have that going on then yeah, i get it, but when we're talking (semi?) real life, it's different. idk how far it applies to the entertainment industry at large though; shin se kyung is part of the korean entertainment industry. i mean, IU doing a special stage with yoseob got her antis.. but kim so eun in boys before flowers was paired with kim bum, and his fans supported their pairing and said stuff like 'please take care of our kim bum' and all that. broke my expectations a little

Huh, I think those cases are exactly why idols aren't allowed to date. So much of the SNSD anti base comes from butthurt jealous boyband fangirls, and if the news came out that they were actually dating you can bet that the amount of anti shenanigans would become unbearable. Odds are ShinSeKyung is gonna have to have her mail inspected and food/drink checked for dangerous shit

I made a mention of Yunjae in the Popularity Politics post(link in the sidebar). That and I wouldn't call myself a DBSK fan, although I do enjoy their music, so I don't know that much about their fandom. If you are(a DBSK fan), would you mind elaborating on the Yunjae point? Why do you think it has such a die-hard fanbase?(besides just having excessive amounts of fan-service, that was covered in the other post) I was kind of getting into that with my last paragraph about the HetIsEw, but didn't quite know what to say about it. What makes a YaoiFangirl? And on the SNSD side, why are there still HetIsEw fangirls, going beyond the usual "girl on girl is hot!" mentality?
Speaking of the double standard, we kind of played with this subject in chat before, about how maleslash is much more prevalent in the East where femmeslash is the squeefodder in the West. Fanservice for asian boybands is allowed to go so much further where in the west it would produce Squick reactions. Any opinions?
Re: but i don't want to debate, i'm bad at it ;-;spunspiderNovember 3 2010, 20:23:01 UTC
lol wow, did not know that about christian fans, that is ridic what is this nuts justification.
also, yunjae seem to be #2 in the Biggest Kpop Boyband Ship stakes. i've heard that... oh crap i've forgotten!! i'm sorry, i'll come back if i remember, but it was a slash pairing in either shinhwa or g.o.d i think, where their fans were so fierce that the company had to come out and say they weren't in a relationship, and the two members apparently appeared awkward or not as close together after that.
I don't think it's necessarily true that once a pairing gets together, a ship loses its magic. In fact, it's not uncommon to ship an already established couple (hello Izumi/Sig). I think this can happen in one's private life as well, such as when one finds out two people close to you who were dating are breaking up and it's all "D: D: D: But you guys were so great togethr and everything seemed fine! You can't break up because then nothing can be right in the world. D:" (This may also extend to celebrity dating, in which that sense of, "But they're so perfect for each other!" can mean that being an official couple destroys nothing of the enjoyment a fan gets, but actually enhances it. The media, of course, loves to feed off of this. American media especially is in love with ~scandal~ XD)
I dunno, idol-ships just seem to be much more fantastical, but this may stem more from how "usual celebrity" shipping is based solely on their personal lives, whereas n that idols have their idol image functioning as a character of sorts to play, idol
( ... )
True, but in that idol ships are ALL about teasing and fantasy I think they'd follow Joss relationship rules(needs more drama or DIE). Consider how the relationships of H!P idols have that initial "scandal aaaaaghhh!" thing at first but then it just drops off the radar to never be mentioned again. Miki's marriage, for example. They've already been married for over a year already, holy crap! I think the tabloid-celebrity scandal gossip can be squeed over because it's still less fantastical than idol shipping
