Actually 'Twinkle's original title is also 'Twinkle' as per this http://i.minus.com/iWFc5WC34CG5d.png, so we should blame the Western songwriters.

Yeah, but SM has said they commission some of these songs, so they may have left instructions to "make it a really girly but trying to be glamorous and girl power song!" to the original lyricist.

re: Universality and genuineness
I hadn't looked up the lyric translation (SSF's) until now and it just makes me want to facepalm even more. I thought it was more of an "I'm so glamorous" song, akin to some of empowerment/"being single is just fine!" songs that many solo female artists put out, but I guess I shouldn't have expected that much. Of course it's going to be about how they can't get a guy to notice them - because that's the only thing in life that's worthy singing about. I wonder sometimes if Seohyun would prefer to sing songs that are more than just about love or their inability to be loved, which in itself is a pretty ridiculous claim. Even the song admits that "There's a never-ending line of people outside who wish for me," but that one person just doesn't notice. So why the fixation on that one person? Is it supposed to bring some kind of genuineness to their situation, that even as idols, they can't win over everyone ( ... )
