This is why I should never be allowed around new television shows

Even in the face of its exceeding cheesiness, I am totally obsessed with Robin Hood. What began as a simple summer fling has rapidly escalated into true fangirlish passion. That's right -- I'm like Danny Zuko at the beginning of Grease, trying to act all cool in front of my friends when I see Sandy at school but really going "OMGFLAILAHHHSOEXCITED ( Read more... )

guy/marian, robin hood, pictures, my brain is broken

The only reason why I watch the show is Guy of Gisbourne - everything else is just a blur to me, lol - hurray for fangirling!!!!

I watch for all of the castle drama -- the Sheriff, Gisborne, and Marian are the most entertaining characters by far. Not that I have anything against the forest gang (well, for the most part...), but it seems like more exciting things are happening to the people who aren't hiding in the bushes.

Here's the thing, Richard is a far better actor than the series deserves OR the character was written for. Lucy also seems to harbor a slight crush on Richard himself, which is completely understandable. This makes the whole Guy/Marian chemistry really...weird...and unintentional and sort of forbidden. That's what gives it a WHOLE new angle than for what I think the series originally intended. Good for them that they realized that there was something more there than just "bad guy likes good girl" as Marian has a little bad in her just like Guy has a little good.

Ah, you've encapsulated it so beautifully right there! There's that season one interview with Richard, which I'm sure you've watched but I'll go ahead and type it out in the rare event that some curious, potential fan is poking around the comments (in which case -- run, run away! While you still can! Before you spend your days obsessing over silly anachronistic costume dramas!). In regards to Gisborne, he says, "I'm kind of protective of him -- because you kind of have to fall in love with him a bit, and you have to condone what he does or you have to find reasons for what he does, even though they're terrible things," only to follow it up with, "I'm really hoping that when people sit and watch this and when Gisborne is trying to woo Marian that they absolutely squirm in their seats and their skin is crawling ( ... )

I think the thing that's there is that while Guy does terrible terrible things, there's also part of him that seems to want to do good. I think that's evidenced when he WANTS to save his friend at Marian's prompting at the end of last season, he disagrees with the way the Sheriff does things sometimes, but ultimately chooses to side with the Sheriff because that will advance him.

And then there's the fact that I think in some ways the nasty ways he talks about Marian are all bluff. I honestly don't think he would have been a horrible husband to her. Sure, he would have been a man of his time, but I do think he would have doted on her in his own way.

Agreed, and agreed again. He seems very dedicated to working the situation that fate has placed him in, and the fact that Marian seems to offer him something different really throws him for a loop. So I guess you could argue that he's just an opportunist, going for whatever offers him the best benefits, but I do think he operates with some underlying level of honor. I was just watching Becket last night, and a few of Becket's lines seemed to really strike a chord with Gisborne's character. While hobnobbing with politicians, he must "improvise his honor from day to day," unless he should ever "find his true honor." Of course it seems unlikely that Guy should experience a similar religious revelation as Becket, but there is certainly the suggestion that Marian has inspired him with a deeper sense of honor and obligation.

Seriously, I'm not even making this stuff up.

Seriously, you're really not. To be honest, I don't really pay much attention to the show even though I have it on every week - I just glance up when something pretty is happening. But at one point I looked up and WTF is that Robin almost in bed with the Sheriff? Yes it is.

I really have no clue what the plot of this show is. I mean, I can guess Robin probably fights the bad guys, but everything else is conjecture.

The plot is basically that Robin is a spoiled arse spouting ideals of equality whilst simultaneously expecting everybody to bow to his whim without question. I think the show's redeeming grace is that it often acknowledges Robin's penchant for douchebaggery and explores the traditional heroes vs. villains dynamic with a slightly cynical edge. Well, that and the combined hotness of Guy and Marian.

I just wandered over here from robinhoodbbc, and I think we might be destined to be friends. Not only have you devoted a whole gigantic gorgeous post to one of the most tragically underappreciated, beautiful ships in the world (and, oh, Armitage's quote about Guy's feelings for Marian has undone me a little bit as a human being -- sigh!), but you quoted House/Wilson in the process??

I am deeply in awe of how awesome your taste is.

Thanks! I'm glad that you could get something out of my fangirl ramblings, haha. I just added you back -- yay for having friends with whom I can squee over Guy/Marian :)

Oh, do go on... you're making me blush! Just kidding, but it is nice to know that other people share my feelings about this show. Did you and dollsome coordinate your comments? I checked my e-mail this morning and first thought it was just a mistaken double comment, and then I was like -- wait, no, I just have the best luck ever! Two new Guy/Marian friends in one go! I've been watching the show for a couple of months now but I've only just now gotten into the fandom; I'm at that awkward stage where I just have to butt into other people's conversations because I don't really have many friends who watch, so it is great to sit back and have you two do all the work of friending me, haha. I look forward to many fangirl flailings in the future (BECAUSE OMG RICHARD SHIRTLESS NEXT EPISODE??!? THIS IS ME DEAD FROM SQUEE!!).

Congrats on spreading the Guy/Marian love! I'm scared to talk anybody else into watching the show because it is so embarrassingly cheesy; it takes a very special type of fan to both love and accept that, and to just run with the crack inspired insanity. That's probably the best thing about living in America for this show -- its not highly publicized over here, so I don't have to be too embarrassed about watching it because so far the only people I know IRL who have watched it are family members who have been forced into sitting through an episode with me.

YES YES YESSSSS THEY SHOULD MAKE IT LIKE A DECREE OR SOMETHING. FROM THIS DAY FORTH MAY RICHARD ARMITAGE ALWAYS BE SHIRTLESS WHILE SHARING TENDER MOMENTS WITH LUCY. SO SAY WE ALL.
