Summer... ending... so soon... As usual, there is so much that I meant to do and then just never got around to. I did the Great Potter Re-Read, and then completely neglected to post about it. Well, I'm too lazy now to make it up, but there is one question that has been bothering me and that I wish I could clear up.

I don't know why I'm cutting this, because if you haven't read PoA yet then you're probably just not that interested in Harry Potter; I suppose there might be spoilers through DH in the comments )

Well, Snape can't out and accuse Lupin of having a hand in this, and certainly can't say "I think an escaped convict gave you a secret, magical map!" so I always got the feeling that while Snape suspected, as long as Lupin played dumb, there was nothing he could do about it.

Yeah, I agree that he probably couldn't have said any more in front of Harry, but then again we saw in PS/SS that Snape doesn't have any problems with confronting fellow professors one-on-one. I guess it was probably just a matter of leaving it intentionally vague so that the big reveal in the Shrieking Shack was more dramatic. After pondering it some more this afternoon, I think another good (slightly fanwank) explanation might also be that, as Snape seems to see this all as simply a continuation of their school grudge, he sees it as more of a personal mission than a pressing danger. So instead of thinking, "Oh, crazed nutter Black is on the loose and his map conveniently enough pops up right here -- perhaps this might be a huge security threat that I should investigate immediately," he takes the angle of, "Stymied once, but just wait! Your time will come! MUAHAHAHA!!" and is content to wait as long as possible if it means catching his old rivals by himself.

I always got the impression that the nicknames the Marauders gave themselves were really only used amongst themselves... Lucius Malfoy didn't, for example, refer to Sirius as "Padfoot." But I think Snape, being the nosey git that he is, realized that was their nickname and that the Marauders map belonged to them. He's indirectly accusing Lupin but can't outright say it.
