Chapter 33
Kyuhyun immediately shot off his bed when he felt the presence of another person in his room. Ignoring the sudden rush of blood to his head, he wasted no time in dashing towards the uninvited visitor without bothering to identify the person. A split second later, his fingers were already poised threateningly over the latter's throat, fully prepared to strike if the person makes a wrong move.
"What are you doing here?" he snarled at the back of the person's head, though his eyes remained clamped shut as he tried his best to fight off the dizziness that followed his sudden change in position. Definitely not something that he wanted to experience again.
"Kyu… I-it's me…" A familiar voice stammered, evidently startled by Kyuhyun's actions. He paled and lowered his hand at once when he recognized the owner of the voice to be none other than Hyeonmin, pulling her into an embrace without missing a beat, hoping that he wasn't too late to try and calm her down.
"Shit. I'm so sorry. My impulses sort of kicked in," he whispered into her soft locks. The guilt ate him from inside when he noticed how badly she was trembling in his arms, and he couldn't help but wonder about the gravity of his actions. "Are you okay…?" Kyuhyun asked, hoping that he didn't frighten her… too much.
But apparently he did give her quite a shock, because when she pulled away from him moments later, he did not fail to notice how her hand reached up to wipe a stray tear away from the corner of her eye. Nonetheless, she inhaled deeply in the next moment, before looking up at him with a bright smile on her face. "Yes, I'm fine… just a little caught off guard, that's all…" Hyeonmin tried to assure him, but Kyuhyun wasn't buying it. Not when he could still hear the slight trembling of her voice.
"Are you sure?" he kept pressing on, hoping that she would be honest with him. But he should've known that she was going to be stubborn about it, because Hyeonmin let out a light laugh at his relentless questioning, and held his hands in hers as she looked straight into his eyes.
"Kyu, I told you I'm fine, so stop being a worrywart. On the contrary, I would like to know what happened to you. You seem so… edgy these days," she commented, pausing for a little while in order to choose her words properly.
Upon hearing what she had to ask, Kyuhyun let out an exhausted sigh. Trust Hyeonmin to be able to realise a change in his attitude, really, because he was indeed rather agitated as of late - but for good reasons. Without sparing further thought, he dropped himself onto his bed, and ran a hand through his already-messy hair. The mattress towards his left became slightly depressed a short while later, telling him that Hyeonmin had decided to sit next to him. Then Hyeonmin's curious face came into view, as she hovered over his body in order to study his expressions.
Kyuhyun didn't really know how to explain the entire matter to Hyeonmin due to its complex nature, especially the part where he was rather worried that he might disappear on her one day because his master might decide to drag him all the way back to the underworld on a whim. Although his master didn't show any signs that he knew about Kyuhyun's feelings towards Hyeonmin, Kyuhyun still felt the need to be wary - hence why he was being overly suspicious about almost every single thing lately.
"Just worried about some stuff," he stated simply after a short moment's silence, deciding that it was the best explanation for his behaviour without really having to elaborate anything. It was a good thing he knew that Hyeonmin wouldn't push him for answers if he didn't really want to provide them. And it certainly rings true this time as well, because Hyeonmin just gave him an understanding nod before lying on his outstretched arm.
"You know that I'm always here if you need someone to talk to," she mumbled into the material of his shirt, not-so-subtly inhaling the scent that she loved. In spite of the worries still swarming around in his mind, Kyuhyun smiled at Hyeonmin's words. But at the same time, there was also a tinge of bitterness to his feelings, because he knew that no matter how much he wished for it, it was impossible for him to be with her. He also knew that they shouldn't be cuddling like this in his bed since it would just give her false hopes, but he just couldn't help it. The feelings he had for her were too strong to be ignored, and it was a dilemma that has been plaguing him for as long as he came to terms with them.
"You really shouldn't do this, Min… It's going to make it hard for the both of us when that time comes…" Kyuhyun finally sighed when his conscience won the battle over his feelings, and attempted to remove his arm from under her head. He decided to just play along with her beliefs that he was having some sort of weird terminal illness, because he considered it to be an easy way out just in case he disappears all of a sudden. However, just as he was about to sit up, Hyeonmin's grip on his shirt tightened, effectively forcing him to lie on the bed once again.
"I know that, Kyu, but I just want to cherish what little time we have left together. It'll kill me more if I had to force myself to be away from you, even though you're so close to me…" Hyeonmin admitted, blushing slightly at her confession. Kyuhyun couldn't help caressing her cheek with his finger as he settled his gaze on her, wondering what he has done to deserve such an amazing girl. It wasn't very often that someone would sacrifice their time towards something that had no future, after all.
"I'm sorry that I can't do anything more than this. It's really unfair for you to be stuck in this situation, Min," he commented, heart breaking a little because he was really talking about her having to be killed without her knowing, rather than her being glued to him with the thoughts that he was going to die. At times like these, Kyuhyun didn't know whether he should be thankful that double entendres exists.
Hyeonmin showed him a little pout when she heard what he had to say, obviously not very happy that he was shouldering all the blame. "It's my personal choice, Sikyu. There's no need for you to apologise for this," she reprimanded, but her facial expressions completely altered when she caught a glimpse of the clock on his night stand. "Oh gosh, I'm running late for my appointment! I'm sorry I can't spend more time with you today, Kyu… but I promise I'll make it up to you tomorrow," Hyeonmin explained apologetically, wasting no time in getting off the bed, even though she was very reluctant in doing so.
"It's fine, Min. Just have fun, wherever it is you're going. You don't have to dedicate all your time in the world for me," he smiled, though his heart twitched a little when Hyeonmin habitually pulled him in for a soft kiss. With every passing kindness that she would show him, the guiltier he would feel for keeping her with him. And he was begrudging his human side for being such a soft-hearted person when it came to her. He knew that it meant bad news when his human side was growing stronger and overshadowing his merciless angel of death side, but Kyuhyun really had no idea how he should stop the progression. At this rate, he was going to be doing things according to his feelings rather than point precision.
"Well well, isn't that such a heartwarming scene?"
Another voice spoke up behind Kyuhyun when he shut the door after seeing Hyeonmin off, causing his blood to freeze, then boil at the recognition of the owner. Slowly but surely, he turned around while clenching and unclenching his fists by the side, trying his best to not let the emotions dictate his actions. It was more or less a taboo for angels of death to allow themselves to be controlled by emotions - not that they had much of it to begin with - and Kyuhyun had allowed them to run free for far too long.
"What are you doing here, Chungho? Did I not make it clear to you that I didn't want you snooping around Hyeonmin?" Kyuhyun growled at the man seated casually on the window sill, his voice low and dangerous. His eyes narrowed even more when the latter flashed a lazy smirk in his direction.
"Not snooping around Hyeonmin, yes, but you didn't say that I couldn't hang out around your bachelor pad, did you?" Chungho replied, tapping his chin as though he was in deep thoughts. His eyes followed Kyuhyun as the latter walked towards the sofa which was situated directly across the window, and made himself comfortable on the furniture.
"When I said that, I meant that I do not want to sense you within a 70-mile radius. Now let me repeat my question - what the hell are you doing here?" he reiterated his question, making sure that the other male got a clear message that he was in no mood for games.
That was more than adequate to wipe the smirk off Chungho's face, because he turned serious in the next second. "You're no fun," he commented dryly, but before Kyuhyun could intercept, he continued with the things that he had intended to put across. "It looks like you're having some… difficulties in completing the job that master has sent you to do, though," Chungho mused, causing Kyuhyun to stiffen at the notion.
"If you intend to just sprout nonsense in my apartment, then I would suggest you to leave within five seconds before it's too late. I can't guarantee you that I'm going to play nice," Kyuhyun muttered darkly, attempting to divert the topic away from something that he didn't want the other to know.
"You know very well that I made perfect sense with that, Cho Kyuhyun. You should actually thank me for finding a way to help you out with that problem," he said as he drummed his fingers against his cheek, looking as if he was bored with the conversation.
"What do you mean…?" Kyuhyun treaded carefully, trying to determine whether Chungho was attempting to deceive him, however he intends to do it.
"Please don't tell me you forgot what happened today morning in your room," Chungho drawled, and Kyuhyun's eyes immediately flew wide-open despite his attempts in keeping himself as composed as possible.
Suddenly, everything fell into place - that was why Kyuhyun shot up in alarm in the morning when Hyeonmin entered his room. Chungho was the culprit all along, entering the room for a split second before disappearing back into the realm of death. Damn the ability to switch dimensions, he cursed in his mind. Kyuhyun had a weird feeling about his reactions for the entire morning, considering the fact that he should be so used to Hyeonmin's presence to the extent that he was confident he wouldn't - shouldn't - overreact like that, and now he knew the answer to it.
Within a blink of an eye, Kyuhyun was already standing right in front of Chungho, his right hand grabbing the latter by the collar of his shirt and looking absolutely livid. "You lowlife," he hissed through clenched teeth.
"What? I'm just doing you a favour since it looks like you won't be able to perform as expected," Chungho shrugged nonchalantly, not the least bit intimidated by Kyuhyun's animosity. "And ah, I didn't realise you still possessed your angel of death abilities," he commented, evidently talking about Kyuhyun's paranormal speed.
"I'm not too bothered about using it," Kyuhyun shot back. "This is my final warning, Chungho. Any more such crap from you, and I'm going to make sure you'll never be able to walk on the face of both this world and the realm of death."
"Geez, what an uptight person you are. You know what? I'm very interested to see what you can do with your attenuated angel of death abilities, Cho Kyuhyun…" Chungho rolled his eyes and said mockingly, then disappeared from Kyuhyun's grasp entirely. It didn't take much for Kyuhyun to figure out that the coward retreated back to the realm of death, and he angrily slammed an open palm against the window, making the glass panes rattle at the force. Not only does he have to find a way to prevent Hyeonmin from being killed - either by him or the other angels of death - he has to deal with an annoying prick in the form of Chungho as well. Just his luck.
