Chapter 02

The moment Hankyung returned to the comforts of his apartment, he immediately slid into the office chair to work on the computer without even bothering to take off the leather jacket he was wearing. It didn't really matter since the air of the apartment was rather cooling anyway. He pulled off his shades, popped his contact lenses out, and put on a pair of rimless spectacles while waiting for the computer to boot up, before opening up the file he had received from Heechul. His eyebrows furrowed together as he scrutinized every detail printed on the paper, pausing to look up every now and then to think.

Hong Minjoo… the name sounds oddly familiar to him, but Hankyung couldn't quite figure out where he had heard it before. He jabbed furiously at his temples to make his memory work, and snapped his fingers together when he finally recalled it. He allowed his fingers to dance rapidly across the keyboard, typing her name into the search bar of his browser so that he could gain a better understanding of his next target. Even though Heechul did say that everything he needs to know is compiled in the file, Hankyung knew better. All that would be provided is the target's rough daily schedule, the name, and the photo.

Hankyung remembered that he had come across her name once in the newspaper, but his memory about the other details surrounding her was fuzzy. His eyes widened in tandem when he loaded the main webpage which carried her information. She was the daughter of one of the richest and most influential businessman in South Korea, Hong Jinsung, who had recently passed away due to a heart attack, and the funeral was covered by most major newspapers. And needless to say, she was involved in the news reports as well.

But what came across Hankyung as weird was the reason why Heechul wanted her dead. As far as he knows, her father's - or rather, her company doesn't associate themselves with the dealings of the underworld. And as much as Hankyung didn't want to have any doubts about his target, he couldn't help himself from feeling that way.

The principle that "you should never question the choice of the targets" was slowly being eroded in him after the last assassination that he had carried out. Usually he would come across the news reports of his victims being found dead at a certain place, and then find out from the articles that they were either crime moguls, or definite business rivals of his employer. Killing off your rivals to eliminate the competition was a common thing in the underworld, so Hankyung did not think too much about it.

However, in his most recent job, Hankyung found out that the woman that he had killed in the strip club was actually an undercover agent from the Special Task Force of the Korean Police. That was when he began to wonder what on earth Heechul is doing, to the extent that he had to send a killer to silence an undercover cop. Coupled by this…

He really didn't know whether he should keep on doing it anymore.

Kibum, under Heechul's order, followed Hankyung all the way back to the latter's apartment. It was quite a hard feat to accomplish, considering the fact that he couldn't quite get too close to the man. Hankyung was, after all, the most skillful person in tailing others, so needless to say he would be able to realize that someone's following him with relative ease as well.

He did not follow Hankyung into his apartment complex immediately after alighting from the car. Instead, Kibum pretended to purchase something from the grocery store right across the street, but positioned himself adequately to be able to look through the glass panels of the apartment's lobby in order to monitor Hankyung's movements. The moment the other man disappeared into the elevator, Kibum sprinted across the streets into the building, and waited patiently for the numbers to stop increasing.

When it came to a halt on the second floor, Kibum immediately threw himself at the direction of the stairs and ran all the way up. He opened the door of the stairwell slightly, and noticed Hankyung entering the apartment that was the nearest to him. He did not approach the unit until several minutes later, once he was fairly certain that the assassin wouldn't be anywhere near the door.

Kibum walked silently towards Hankyung's apartment, and pressed his ear against the door to hear for movements within the house. All he could hear were muffled sounds of someone tapping against the keyboard, so he slid to the floor and pushed a foldable mirror under the slit of the door. Kibum adjusted the angle of the mirror slightly until he could catch the situation within the house, and realized that Hankyung was seated with his back facing the door.

Perfect, Kibum thought, as he exchanged the mirror with a special key which could open most types of doors. He fumbled around with the lock silently, smirking when a satisfying soft click could be heard. Slowly, he slipped into Hankyung's apartment, feeling thankful that the room was carpeted, so that his footsteps would be muffled. Kibum slid into the kitchenette in one fluid motion, and hid himself behind a kitchen cabinet to observe the man.

From his position, he could see the computer screen clearly, and noticed that the Chinese man was searching for information on his target - which wasn't supposed to be done. Being one of the killers that Heechul trusted the most before he became the latter's right hand man, Kibum knew very well that this was clearly a violation of the trust that an employer puts in the people they hire.

Deciding that he had found out enough about Hankyung for now, and seeing that the other man was still busily typing away on his keyboard, Kibum took the opportunity to inch towards the door and leave the place before he was discovered. However, the moment his hand reached for the handle of the door, the sound of gears clicking together as a result of someone cocking a gun almost immediately next to his ear caused Kibum to freeze mid-movement.

Kibum cursed silently in his head - he didn't even hear Hankyung getting up from his seat and picking out his gun, wherever he was storing it. Slowly but surely, Kibum stood up and turned around, before finding himself staring cross-eyed at the muzzle of the gun which was pointed in his face. One wrong movement and he would end up being shot point-blank.

"Good day," Kibum greeted the Chinese man politely, not showing even the slightest hint of being nervous. He had been in this kind of situation one too many times to even feel the least bit intimidated - Heechul was quite a short-tempered man after all.

"Indeed," Hankyung nodded, but the gun remained unmoved in its position. "So would you enlighten me who you are and the reason why you're in my apartment? I believe I can have you arrested for breaking into my house, no?" he added, tone low and dangerous.

"My name is Kibum, and that's all you'll have to know, Mr. Han," Kibum smiled amiably at the older male. Behind him, his left hand fingered the edges of the knife tugged under the folds of his long-sleeved shirt, waiting for the perfect opportunity to use it.

"Hmm, let me guess. You were sent by Heechul-nim," Hankyung said, and Kibum realized that his phrase came out more as a statement rather than a question.

Kibum's smile faltered slightly. It was the first time that he had been caught spying on someone, and needless to say, it was also the first that his intentions were seen through this soon. "You're sharp," he commented lightly, earning a slight smirk from the gun-wielder standing in front of him.

"I'll let you off the hook this time, Kibum, but I can't really guarantee what will happen the next time I find you in my house without an invitation. I have no intentions of killing one of my own… if I might say so. Tell Heechul-nim not to worry. I will complete the job as ordered," Hankyung replied, as he slid the gun back into its holder, which hung from his belt behind him.

Kibum scoffed indignantly at the older male's statement, and turned around to leave. But before he exited the house, he decided to throw in a piece of advice for Hankyung. "You better remember what you have said, Mr. Han. You haven't seen what Heechul is capable of doing when his subordinates defy his order."

Hankyung smiled wistfully at the retreating form of the spy, as the door clicked to a close behind the latter. "I'm definitely interested in seeing what he'll do, then," he said to no one in particular.
