In this tutorial we shall turn this picture into this:
using Photoshop CS, however it can most likely be translated into other programs.

Before you continue on, all I ask is:

First, prepare the image/base however you prepare them. I myself sharpened the image before cropping it down to 100x100 pixels.

Then, I duplicated the base once and set it to SCREEN at 50%. However, depending on how light or dark your picture is, you may have to adjust that.

Make a new layer and fill it with #E6E6E6 and set it to COLOR BURN. This makes it slightly darker.

Make a second new layer and fill it with #003663 before setting it to EXCLUSION 50%.

Now repeat the step before by making a third new layer and filling it with #E6E6E6 set to COLOR BURN.

Another new layer. Fill it with #DDC3A6 and set it, once again, to COLOR BURN.

It's time to make your fifth and final layer. Fill it with #FFD2D4 and set it to SOFT LIGHT.

Now, go back to your base layer and duplicate it. Paste it above all the other layers and desaturate it. Use your blur tool and blur it completely. This keeps your image from becoming too sharp. Set it to SOFT LIGHT.

The icon is now finished!

Feel free to showcase your work in comments here, I'd love to see what you come up with!
