A Labor Day Campaign Summary

I'm sorry I've been away so much, friends.  I've been so scattered that I've been completely unable to concentrate on anything beyond working to survive.  It's a wonder that I accomplish that much, sometimes.  In any case, as I begin to get my shit back together I thought it might be nice to return to the political blogging beat, so that those of ( Read more... )

Palin's a proponent of abstinence-only sex ed with a living memorial to its usefulness in her household-- her 17-year-old pregnant daughter, who's getting her very own shotgun wedding on the global stage.

There's a special hell for people who put their kids through this kind of shit.

McCain knew about it before the announcement, too. I really wonder if the man isn't senile. Apparently he thought that the questionable down's-syndrome baby + pregnant teenaged daughter = a-okay. I really wish I could know wtf the thought process on THAT was.

I don't think he got to have a thought process on this one-- Rove and the Dominionist wing of the GOP had it for him, and apparently had it without a thorough vetting process.

Kos is reporting that most of McCain's staffers had no idea about Bristol Palin's pregnancy and are pretty stunned. Neither her own spokesman nor her McCain campaigh spokesman knew, apparently.

I mostly feel bad for the kid and especially for the kid's boyfriend. People tend to focus on the pregnant woman in these cases and forget that there's a kid standing back there with his own mess of teenaged emotions-- and now he gets to cope with all that with the national spotlight turned on his girlfriend, too.

I'm honestly sorry that Bristol Palin and her boyfriend get to be the joke of the week on Leno and Letterman. That's a hellish thing to have to face any time in your life but when you're just 17 and this is what you get known for? Boinking your boyfriend without a condom and ending up pregnant when Mom is a staunch abstinence-only proponent.

And that's the elephant in the room the GOP don't want to address with their insistence that this is a hands-off story - abstinence doesn't work and Bristol Palin is the poster child for that fact. The socially conservative wing of the GOP don't want to hear that, much less contemplate how very much they look like two-faced wankers, right now.

1. Sarah Palin is also a muppet, since she has a pregnant 17-year old daughter, as you may also have heard.
2. Most people did not like the idea of Joe Biden as Obama's running mate (wtf IS that?), but when I heard the news people give a brief run-down on who he was, I was convinced.

I still think Obama would be the best thing to happen to the US for a long time if he got the presidency, and if I could I'd vote for him. Joe Biden sounds like a man who is decent enough to do a good job, but he also has the balls and experience to do it WELL. It also seems to me that, as you said, he is McCain's most feared nemesis (alongside Obama's general popularity.)

Looks like Joe Biden's lining up to be to Barack Obama what Lyndon Johnston was for John Kennedy - Attack Dog, dirty fighter, Guy Who Gets Things Done, etc.

Let's try for a happier ending this time, eh kids? Far too many parallells with the Kennedy presidency for me to feel entirely comfortable, here.
