I'll just ignore your statement about people and real fishing. But answer me this: Why do I enjoy fishing mini-games in things like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon?

They're non-realist toy minigames, occupying the same pleasantly idle space as something like Minesweeper or Tetris. Games that do not motivate particularly deep investment. This seems to me different from the casual segment represented by a game like Deer Hunter, which seems to aim towards deep investment from someone who does not usually invest in video games.

I usually have no patience for mini-games embedded in better games, though. Chocobo racing? Blech.
