Should the end of your first paragraph be "threat" rather than "thread"?

Also! You should read The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work, if you haven't already. It has some wonderful bits on industrialization and the hidden parts of work.

man i just finished one Alain de Botton book (the Proust one) and had to get rid of another (the travel one) a few chapters in. I'm not into him yet - I've found these two at least to be irritatingly precious and mannered, very high-concept but low-reward - but I'm still willing to give him a chance! I've got the Pleasures and Sorrows of Work on the bedside table now, I might take your recommendation and open it next.
