A few years ago, I spent most of the summer sleeping on the floor of a friend’s kitchen. It was a lots-of-time, not-much-money sort of summer so everyone was pretty excited when the set of lockpicks that he’d ordered off the Internet arrived. The reason that consumer locks don’t need to be more pick- or bump-proof than they are now is that it’s generally easier to just smash a window.

Heh. Yeah.

So ... the lockpicking story has always made me uncomfortable. I'm trying to put my finger on why.

Maybe it's simply that I don't like being reminded of how not-secure I actually am. I mean, if I really stop and think about it I can say "Yeah, okay, it's not very hard to break into my house," but on a daily basis I lock the door and feel safe.

I had the "creepy!" reaction to Google streetview, too. Well, both the "wow, cool!" and the "eee, creepy!" reactions simultaneously, actually. (As soon as I found out I sent all my family members an email with a link to the Streetview of my own house, and the text, "This is neat! And creepy!")

Someone will use your sprinkler to access your bank records.

That is a truly horrible thought!
