Kakashi could never really justify to himself why he passed Team 7 in the end. Nobody asks him, not even Sasuke, who sits in Kakashi's kitchen and slurps instant noodles with as much dignity as he can muster.
Sasuke doesn't ask questions, only makes observations. "Kakashi feeds me cancer," he tells Naruto, when he asks why he follows the jounin home sometimes after missions.
"Oh. Oh?" says Naruto, and doesn't pry, because he's got places to go and things to do, Iruka-sensei is going to be so glad he got back safe from that mission and he's going to eat so much ramen and--
Sasuke is always gone by then, with a muttered, "dumbass," that could be interpreted as affectionate if one is daring enough to brave his wrath. Kakashi himself has been subject to this wrath more often than not, because he likes that he can see the child in Sasuke sometimes. For some reason, he appreciates Sasuke's fits of anger in the same way he appreciates his utter lack of manners, the way Sasuke feels entitled to intrude upon him at any time of day or night for any reason whatsoever, the way Sasuke's stopped buying food for himself since he's discovered he can make Kakashi feed him.
Once in awhile Kakashi has to tell him to just go the hell away, but Sasuke never seems to hear anyway, just sits himself down on the edge of Kakashi's bed and says, "You have food in the fridge, right?"
It's been awhile since Kakashi has had family.
