Oh what the fuck

Apparently there's yet another attempt at a proper B7 reboot.

Sounds ominous, but then I'd probably say that about anything that wasn't written by the Moff or something...

I was just watching B7 with a friend last night, and we kept saying how we were both hoping and dreading a reboot.

Yup. For once, I would like to hear something positive about new attempts at B7.

The problem is that if someone who doesn't *get* B7 (or the mechanics of successful remaking) attempts a remake, it will fail utterly and then it will be dead forever. I'd be willing to let the murrcans have a go if only the Beeb (or someone else in the UK who was trustworthy) had been allowed to do a good, UK-based remake *first*. Then the clueless American networks could try all they liked, and likely fail, but it would be OK because we'd still have a British original remake to cling to.

Yeah, absolutely. Actually, I was browsing Tumblr and some fans were discussing a potential remake and someone said that they would never want the Moff to get his hands on it. o_O What the fucking fuck? If anyone could do it, it would be him, although I have heard he isn't a fan of B7. So he must have some sort of character-based dystopian space opera blindness himself for some strange reason ( ... )

Oh, crap. It'll probably have a US cast.

Why an US reboot for a show that's full of very typically British snark and humour and darkness? Why? We all know how the Prisoner and LoM remakes turned out. Really hoping this will die in development hell.

Honestly, I'm surprised there hasn't been a fantastic UK-based reboot yet because it's such a great series with such fantastic writing. I'm amazed how often B7 is ignored. I wonder if it's the whole character-centric thing, because that always seems to be ghettoised by the fanboys who want action and suspense and adventure, whereas the mostly-female fanbase loves the series because of character stuff. (Sorry if I'm pulling the "it's secretly all sexism" argument out of my arse again but I've been thinking of it a lot recently, the ghettoisation of great character stuff in classic SF telly and how it's virtually always loved by the intelligent fangirls and scorned by certain types of influential fanboys who just want stuff with Daleks in.)

At least the fanfic and fanbase for those two series is firmly for the UK originals. We can hope any crappy remake will be ignored, but with you in hoping it'll never happen.

Maybe it's just so old people don't think about it? Or the BBC hurt it with their assumption that it was all about Servalan swanning about in silk (going by the stuff they have up about it). Certainly it's the characters who drew me in. I enjoy action and hard SF and all that along with the fanboys, but it won't engage me and make me want to read or write more than what I've seen.

"Stuff with Daleks in" - man, yes. (Made me laugh.) I used to like the damn things but being hit with Daleks and Cybermen all the time by RTD turned me right off.

Yeah. I'll just huddle here with the other grumpy old fans and warm my hands by the glow of the old series...

And the BBC's approach to B7 has always been a bit weird, yeah. If you looked at their sites, the "Servalan swanning about in silk" is exactly what you'd get, and they'd see it as just a "space opera", always with a sort of "oh, this was silly but entertaining" implication to it. When I just honestly don't get that because the characterisations are so complex and so intriguing. And then the guys who bought the rights also thought of it as some sort of Star Wars-esque space adventure for kids, bleh.

The whole "who cares as long as it's got cool monsters" thing is what bugs me about The Time Monster in Who, which I've been thinking of writing an essay about (and marahsarie and I will be talking about it and hosting a viewing at the next Redemption). It's so, so hated by the fanboys they even made DVD extras telling us why it was shit. And yet it's one of those few stories in OldWho where you learn tons and tons about the Doctor and the ( ... )
