HD-Erised 2016: Veterans and Newcomers

Jan 03, 2017 12:17

As I was looking over the anonymous masterlist for this year's hd-erised fest, I was struck by how many veterans of the HD fandom were still creating fanworks for the fest, even as many newcomers are joining for the first time. I think this speaks to how popular HD fandom has been and still remains!

Thanks! I'm especially amazed that there are veterans going back as far as the early 2000's!

In fact, when I first saw marysiak's name, I thought she was a newcomer, since she was so before my time. I was so blown away when I discovered the opposite :)

Really interesting!

I think you've missed me. I did Erised this year as a pinch hitter and published my first H/D in 2011. I think I did a couple of drabbles before this but I can't remember. It's absolutely horrible but here it is, LOL

sh#t!!! I was so afraid I'd miss someone!

I started putting this together weeks ago, grabbing the giftee's name off each fic, and going by the original sign-up posts too. And I told myself to go back and double-check for last minute changes and additions, and I even remember seeing your name on one of the last days and telling myself, "oh don't forget writcraft" AND I TOTALLY FORGOT WRITCRAFT.

Crap. Going back to fix right now!

Thanks, the most up to date versions of my fics are on ArchiveofourOwn.

Of course. I prefer to link to the original posts when I can find them, as these are more likely to show accurate publication dates ( which is what I'm interested in). You never know for sure with AO3.

But I added an AO3 link to yours.

Yeah I mostly don't back date when I upload to AO3 as it means no one ever sees your stuff. But I've hugely rewritten things (well some bits more than others, no major plot changes but lots of tidying and fixing of bits that were a bit crap) since the original posts and of course there's the actually finishing the story thing, which is fairly vital and only happened this year. Does that make Circles of Influence the fic that spans the most time in fandom, started in 2003 and finished 2016?.

Oooh, good question! That's certainly a strong candidate!

It's a flaw in my database that while I have consistently made notes on when fics were begun, for ongoing WIPs, I haven't always noted when they were completed :( Bad researcher!

So it won't be easy for me to answer this question for sure, though I can't imagine there are too many other HD fics written over the course of 13 years!

Wow, that's quite the compilation! You know, if you'd have quizzed me on what my first H/D was, I would have been wrong, because I would have said Something in the Middle or Beyond, which I wrote for Shelly's birthday in January of 2013. But lo and behold, there's a drabble set from May of 2012! Once I read it, I remembered it, but it really surprised me to see it nonetheless. I made an appreciative sound over my own last line, too, and then had to laugh at myself! ;-P :-D

Thanks, SG!

You're welcome :)

So glad I could remind you of this drabble set! (I'm also glad that as far as you know, I didn't miss something written earlier ^^)

And the drabble is really good too ♥

Holy crap!
This is so interesting! When I first posted that fic (and I now cringe thinking about how bad it is!), I never thought I'd be on a list with some of the people I'd been following myself!

Isn't it cool?

And I wouldn't cringe too hard - no one's first fic is a masterpiece (unless you're JK Rowling, I guess!) It wasn't my intention to make anyone self-conscious - I'm honestly just really fascinated to see how long some people have been writing, and how broad a range of years/authors the hd-erised fest encompasses :)
