The Wake-up Call of the Real World

I went to college for nearly 10 years - 6 years full time, 4 years part time, and I make no secret of the fact that I really liked it and the college environment. I used to think I might like being a professor (I've kind of changed my mind about that now ( Read more... )

I forgot to mention there ARE fields that are niche but without a lot of competition, and that's not a bad place to be, but usually there's a reason why less people go into it. My brother is a Nuclear Engineer for example - great field to be in because there aren't enough of them out there and he can pick and choose jobs. I mentioned astronomy in my post because there really seems to be a lot of people studying it compared to the jobs actually available.

...since when is $60K a good salary?! Business majors shouldn't be bragging about that. Ha!

The ones that should be bragging are the nerdy boys who got their computer science degrees and left school to get hired at $100K+ at 22 years old. Now that's scary. (And no, I am not kidding. I have lunch with someone in said group every few weeks. He's still nerdy. And rich. And single.)

For "just out of college" it's not bad, although I'm sure some get a lot more than that.

People earning more money than they know what to do with -- for some reason this reminds me of young professional athletes who probably have little idea how to manage their money (indeed, many of them squander it). Heh, if I got a signing bonus of a few million dollars, I'd invest it and never have to worry so much about where the next paycheck is coming from.

I was guilty of this too (on a much smaller scale) -- once I got my first full-time job out of college, I started spending my money on games (my interest was collecting vintage games) instead of learning how to manage the money. I guess buying collectibles is technically an investment, but the market is flooded with old video games and so they aren't worth as much now. ;)
