I guess when I looked at the settings when it popped up this AM I was okay with "open" since it would send you information when folks linked to your stuff. But I guess I misinterpreted that intent.

You didn't misinterpret it. That's what the pingback is for.

The Twitter/Facebook thing is different, but was implemented at the same time.

LJ did inform folks. I saw it when I logged into the site last night. It was released and placed in the news feed at that time.
