My sister ran into this with the VA DMV. They wanted an original birth certificate. Tried to tell her that her certificate of overseas birth wasn't sufficient. She, being nonconfrontational, was about to leave in disgust. My mother just stared at them and informed them that they could get the original certificate -- but it wouldn't be too helpful unless anyone at the DMV could read German... They gave my sister her license.
I would *love* to see the people at the DMV try to parse a German birth certificate. That? Would be awesome. "Deutsch? Ah thought she wuz German, not Dutch..."
Sadly, I've been informed by relatives in VA that after 9/11, VA has gotten even worse than NC about licensing, since one of the hijackers had a VA license. *sigh*
If they were being careful about verifying identity, I could (within reasonable limits) understand it. But so much of what we've seen just seems to be people exercising the absolute control they're given over other people through bureaucratic process because they're bored at work.
Aww, thanks! It's so good to be back here, things like this only get me down for a little while. They're pretty ubiquitous anyway: I think it's something they hire for at the DMV.
[Mental note: must stop typing "DMZ" for "DMV," however appropriate that might be...]
At some point, I should probably break down and do that. I *think* my mother still has my Social Security Card...err...somewhere...so maybe time to order a replacement.
I need to order a replacement too. I had my original social security card from before when they started putting "Do No Laminate" on them (and, of course, I had laminated it :) but like an idiot kept it in my wallet. For a while I also had my keys attached to my wallet. The unfortunate thing came when one day I forgot and left my keys in the front door with the wallet hanging from the ring. Sure enough, someone took it. :-( So much for my SS card.
