After being told by the travel agent that it was best to wait before buying the within-USA flight (ie between LAX and Fresno), when I went in the other day I was told that the cheap tickets were all sold and it would be about $300 per person for the flight. That wouldn't be sooo bad, except that the next flight is at 2 pm, when we get in at 9 am.

I think texts would still be ridiculously expensive, so probably AIM is best all around! I'd like to not get a cell, but it might be necessary u_u

If you can find a window where both of you would be at home and awake, skype works really well.

Why not do greyhound? It looks like they have an 11:00 bus leaving that arrives in Fresno at 4:20, and it's $58 for two people (total). There is a shuttle from LAX to the station, which is something like $4.
