I had a bookmobile *and* the scholastic fairs. But I also seem to recall that after 3rd grade there was nothing at the fair that I hadn't already read or just didn't want.
It came to my school every year. I pretty much never got anything, mostly because I didn't bring the memos home from school and thus never had any money. I know the first year I didn't realize it wasn't the same as the library and took a million books up to the counter, only to be told they weren't free. Embarrassing! I was also way ahead of my grade in reading and the book fairs were mostly "baby books" anyway.
I do remember getting a book about kittens when I was in, oh, second grade. My mother was annoyed because it was a picture book and way too young for me, but hey! kittens!
I loved the book fairs, and always wanted more books than my parents would buy for me. I think I got my copy of Misty of Chincoteague from a book fair.
My elementary school also had a Christmas store event. In December, for a week, a little store would set up. You could pick out what you wanted to buy, fill out the form, get the money from your parents and pay them, and I think either pick up your gifts or have them delivered to the school. Sure, it was dollar store stuff and my parents paid for it, but I felt so proud to be shopping for Christmas.
