I'd recommend some of switchknife's stories, such as And Tell Me Who Is Victor. Then scroll down this list and check out Night Watchers, Point of Departure, Prisonnier de Guerre, and Rise Before Dawn. Mind the warnings, because these fics can be dark.

You might also take a look at ellen_fremedon's Long Summer series and Help Wanted: God and Executioner by pir8fancier (also here on AO3).
