I started reading the Lymond books again. I say "started again," because I read the first two last year, and then decided I did not have the patience for the plot and the shenanigans and Lymond never, you know, stuttering, or conjugating a Latin verb wrong, or anything ( Read more... )

Hi - Lymond doesn't have sex with Guzel for awhile because he just isn't interested (but she is, but is too proud to force the issue.) He is too busy trying to be non-human. He does start sleeping with her for any one of or all of the following reasons:

1)the Tsar has questioned his sexuality
2)Lymond realizes he owes her
3)to save Venceslas from being her boy toy (it is Guzel who is sleeping w/him, not Lymond)

Yeah, I can buy that. I've read some other peoples' analyses since writing this, and apparently I'm the only person in the world who bought that Lymond was actually sleeping with Venceslas, and it wasn't just Guzel Guzel-ishly making people think he was for blackmail purposes. I just wasn't paying enough attention to the Russian sections.

(And I bet there are another half-dozen irritatingly subtle background affairs going on there, but I only finished the series a couple days ago and am too burnt out to re-read any of it soon.)
