A few thoughts on this: Because of primary strategic and secondary targets along with prevailing winds, Texas actually has a higher survivability rate than one would expect. If you were to plan a residence west of Austin and/or San Antonio, fallout could possibly be within manageable ranges with only an improvised shelter. However, I personally would not want to risk that. A little work with a “jackhammer” and plans for a raised flower garden and courtyard, is more of my line of thinking (LOL). That is, if I make it there......
Thats interesting that the Midwest is the largest danger zone along with California. I would have expected to have seen a little more red in the North East.
