NPR's list of the top 100 sci-fi/fantasy books, as voted on by 60,000 people.  I'll quote Neil Gaiman, when he said "Ignore the placings, read the books."  Or at least, take a look at the books, and see if they sound interesting.

This is a weird list - how come some of them are individual books (that are part of series, like Dragonflight and Going Postal), and others are hugely long series? And Neal Stephenson is on there 4 times and CJ Cherryh and Octavia Butler aren't there at all? I cry shenanigans! >.>

I know! And even series are treated oddly -- The Sword of Truth is on alone, as are the two Pratchett books, and both of those are part of a series -- and other series are broken apart, like the Sword of Shannara trilogy-that-is-only-sort-of-a-trilogy. I sort of want to know what their submission process was -- it seems very arbitrary.
