I brought it to the dying man, who whispered into my ear
a code word
a secret message
for a princess in disguise
as a baker's apprentice.
I found her
and she wore a locket with a picture inside.
On the side of the picture was a flash of something
a bridge or a hand or a giraffe or all three
and then I knew.
And I went to the corner of society
where it meets with the wilderness
and opened the trapdoor
and walked down stairs to
the very depths of the earth and the ocean
and in the fires
and the magma
and the heat
there you were.
