My Rantypants

Dec 02, 2008 07:56

Let me show you them.

So over on Scans Daily, someone posts us some Wolverine First Class. Go have a look, it's a nice little story.

Read it? Great. So at first I go "Hey, slick art there kids!" ( Then I reach the fourth page and just start getting mad. )

art, fail

Girl, those rantypants look good on you. Thanks for pointing out why my attention was wandering after a while and I just started skimming--it actually wandered too much for me to work out what you were gonna be ranting about, but then I came back and was all "yyyyyeah."

I mean, I suppose the artist is, like, going for a...sort of...essential stillness of the world while all this intense apple dialog goes on, and not wanting to distract from the important thinky bits, but frankly the literary merit ain't enough to carry the whole thing. And I'm sure there are better ways of doing that anyway.

The essential stillness only works if it's done on purpose. When you have a flag that doesn't flap in the dramatic wind for five panels...that does not parse as "on purpose" to anyone.

Nope, it parses as "couldn't be bothered."

Oy, I'm not even that lazy when I make comics. Odd!

I really think that this can be chalked up to "we did not have enough time to do it right."

"I am a lazy fucker, as long as it's pretty no one will care" is just as likely, but God help me I have give people the benefit of the doubt. It keeps my faith in humanity alive.

See, that works fine if the comic trope you're going for is Dinosaur Comics. Or Diesel Sweeties. Not so much with the Marvelverse.

also, there's something about the way the guy in red is drawn that gets up my nose. He's sort of shapeless and the volume of his clothes in space is weird. It reminds me of that abysmal comic adaptation of Dragons of Autumn Twilight where the artist can do two facial angles and that's it.

also also "this here apple is what we call a symbology."

METAPHORICAL DAAAAWN is rising.

Yeah he's got a lot of "this is a badass Asian", "this is what a ninja wears" about him, without much effort to actually...make him a character. You look at that guy and the picture says "I am not real enough to poop."

He is real enough to dangle Wolvie off a temple, though. That counts for something.

I dunno, I have this immediate knee-jerk reaction to mysterious/badass/ninja/koan-reading/inscrutable characters which is "oh please." This is why I don't like kung fu movies. Of its sort that is a particularly egregious example of inexplicable apple-centric mysticism. Wolvie should've been able to take him.

If he poops at all it would be cherryblossom petals frozen on a dramatic wind.

First class Wolvie is young (or at least still amnesiac about his zomg long life) and needs training. And really, he should get his butt whooped every now and then by someone who's just smarter about fighting than he is.

As someone pointed out in the comments at s_d, one wonders when Capcom will start suing over them borrowing Ryu. Though this character type/design is so pandemic it's like one gorse bush suing another for being prickly.
