[series]: Full Metal Alchemist [manga]
[character]: Roy Mustang

[personality]:
What you see and what you get are not always the same.

A first impression of Roy would be that he is rather shallow. Whenever Riza is out of the office, he is on the military phone line, talking to many of the women that he keeps in contact with, but appearances are deceiving. While many might believe that Roy is a slacker, he does have a drive and a will to do things. After the war on Ishbal, he decided that he wanted to become Fuhrer and he has been working towards that ever since. After all, on the phone line he isn't actually talking to potential dates, but rather doing missions. His goal is to become the Fuhrer. He originally joined the military because he believed that he could make a difference and help the people because the military worked for the people and therefore should be able to help them. He doesn't seem to actually enjoy people, but that too is not the truth. There are a select few that Roy has drawn into him. While he understands how despicable the human race is, for he himself was involved in the massacre of Ishbal people, he always does not simply accept that. He wishes to become Fuhrer to make things better, and even if that means sacrificing himself for the crimes he committed in the war, he is willing to do that.

People do not often see that side of Roy though. He can be pleasant and nice, and has a reputation for being a lady's man, yet he never has a committed relationship. Today, I'll take Josephine to a hotel, have something to eat, and... Another date?! Although he comes across as a power-hungry and smug womanizer, these are mostly facades. He enjoys teasing people, especially 'Fullmetal' with his height, and poking at the dragon that is Major General Armstrong. Only those that he truly trusts know of his true intentions and know the Roy that many people don't see. The war made him re-evaluate his stance on the world, but it did not break him. He is a procrastinator, for Riza states that she likes working for Bradley because he actually does his work. He is a good leader who tells his people not to die, does not give up on them when they have given up on themselves and they in turn have a fiercely loyal attitude towards him.

Yet, he can also be silly. He does promote Hawkeye's dog, after all, and he goes out of his way to jest with people. He is quick witted and intelligent. Knowing that he always needs to be smarter and quicker than the next person, Roy has set up a series of things that keeps him informed. He has a code system that he uses to transfer information between people, especially information that should not be shared. He also is seen with women who he is supposedly taking out on dates, though they are really his informants. To the naked eye, he appears just to be another guy drifting from woman to woman, but he is actually smarter than that. He tends not to take things at face value and looks for a deeper as to why they are happening.

[history]:
Roy’s early life is not touched much upon, though in later chapters it is revealed that Madam Christmas is actually Chris Mustang, Roy’s foster mother. Riza's father would eventually become his sensei, and through him, Roy would learn how to use alchemy, and how to use flames in his Alchemy. Roy became a member of the military, with the belief that he could do good and help the people by joining them. After all, the military was there to protect the people. Riza's father did not share Roy's outlook on this, for his view on the military did not coincide with Roy's. When he learned how committed Roy was to this, he made Roy promise that he would use his alchemy in the correct way and that he would tell him the secret to his greatest alchemy. Before Riza's father can tell him though, he gets sick, coughing up blood. He told Roy that all his secrets had been passed onto his daughter and that she would share them. He also told Roy to look after his daughter for him. The knowledge that he left behind was not in the form of books, but rather on Riza's flesh, and with it, Roy was able to master flame alchemy. He took care of her father's funeral, and told Riza to contact the military if she needed anything. At the grave, he stated that if he could protect everyone with his hands, then he thought he would be happy.

Unfortunately, war happened. The war, or annihilation of Ishbal is not something that Roy talks about, ever. Under the Fuhrer's orders, they attacked Ishbal, and a civil war emerged, which would end only with the annihilation of them. To the people of Ishbal the Alchemists were considered monsters. They had no defence against the alchemy that was used against them, and they were slaughtered. Roy though couldn't help but wonder why they were taking so many risks there, and he could not help but think that there was something else going on. He met up with Hughes, who had been in the same military school as he had, and even more surprisingly, Riza Hawkeye. Even she had grown to have a killer's eyes. As they slaughtered the people of Ishbal, Roy asked if the last elder had anything to say, and he simply cursed them. Roy was seen as a hero amongst his fellow military people, though he did not see it that way. Despite the fact that he believed that he was alone in all of it, his men saw it that he was saving their lives. He realized that he wanted to protect the entire country and stop something like this from happening again. With the words of his companions, Roy's dream of becoming Fuhrer starts to hatch. When he returned back home, he surrounded himself by people that he trusted, with Riza guarding his back and for her to shoot him if he ever leaves his path.

Roy would stay in the military with his ambitions driving him to higher heights. He would eventually travel to seek out the Elric’s, though his information had been incorrect. Expecting a 31 year old, he instead finds an 11 year old who had performed a human transmutation, which was one of the laws that you were not supposed to break with alchemy. Still, he told them about the military and left. During that time, Roy would be promoted to Colonel. He took the brothers to central for their exams, watching as Edward did his alchemy.

Eventually, Hughes would die after trying to call Roy. Although Roy picked up the phone, it was too late and his friend was already dead. Roy would start to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, for Hughes went out of his way to leave the military complex in order to phone Roy. He moved to central, and eventually, through Riza Hawkeye’s encounter with Barry the Chopper, hid him in an apartment. He came to the conclusion that by Hughes’s death, that the brass were involved with something. Second lt Ross was framed for the murder of Hughes. Roy sent Barry to break her out, and when she was escaping down the allies, Roy caught up with her. He burnt her body, something which everyone fell for, for the truth of the matter was Roy realized that Ross was not involved in the murder of his friend. With Riza switching the dental records and he having made a fake body, it is passed off as her.

With Riza out of the office, Roy seemingly did his usually thing. That is, slacking off and using the military line to call his girlfriends. Of course this is all a front, for he talks to Elizabeth, who is Riza, giving orders to “Kate” and “Jacqueline”, since they were all out on a mission for him. He had Havoc guard Barry, switching with others. When Barry’s body comes back for his soul, Roy moved into action. He encountered Gluttony, whom he used his fire against, and was yelled at by Riza for jeopardizing himself and not staying where he was meant too. As they chased down Barry, they learn about the homunculi. He and Havoc eventually meet up with Lust, to learn about the truth behind Hughes’s death. Lust made him and his gloves wet, which should stop his flame ability, and gravely injured both he and Havoc. She left them for death, though she didn’t actually check to see if they were. Burning his own wounds, Roy took Havoc’s lighter and tracked down Lust. Having heard that she thought both of them were dead as she was gloating to Al and Riza, he used the lighter and burns her until her stone gives up and she died.

Taken to the hospital, he also yelled at Riza, for she should have known better than to accept something that the enemy told her to be true. With a map showing the location of all the prison’s they are able to draw a circle that included on the military building the tip of the Fuhrer’s office. This led Roy to think that he was possibly a homunculus. Havoc was not as lucky as Roy for his spine injuries were too great. Roy talked to the doctor who did the autopsy of Ross, for the man knew that it had not been her, though he kept Roy’s secret. Eventually Ed attempted to call out Scar who had been going around killing Alchemists. The plan worked and with Riza, Roy put out false reports as to where Scar was in order to make Ed’s plan work. When Ran Fan, Ling’s servant, is hurt, he took her to the doctor who did Ross’s autopsy, for it needed to be kept quiet. Ling confirmed that King Bradley had a tattoo in his eye and that he was a homunculus.

Later, Gluttony, who had been captured and taken by Ling to where Ran Fan was being treated, would see Roy and he went into a rage. Roy, being the one who had killed Lust, was the target of Gluttony, and he ate his fire, making it not a good strategy to use against him. He made a fake Roy out of wood, leaving his jacket on the dummy, and left, leaving Ed, Al and Ling to deal with Gluttony. Back at the headquarters, Roy would make a joke in passing about rumours, even stating that the Fuhrer was a homunculus. Unfortunately, he was drawn into a meeting and finally realized that Hughes’s warning meant. He talked with Bradley, who did not hide the fact that he was a homunculus, for Roy really did not matter in the grand scheme of things and he left him know that. As this happened, Roy’s trusted team was split up into different parts of the country, with Riza being reassigned to Bradley’s personal assistant. He was kept there to understand his position. The Elric brothers would eventually arrive, and under threat to Winry, Ed stayed in the military. Roy too stayed, for his own ‘ambitions’. Roy realized that there was someone bigger than the Fuhrer and that he was being tested.

He met with a disguised Glaman who told him about an encounter where Glaman rejected the idea of immortality and he was then transferred. He further learned that the guys in central are up to something. As well, he is given information from his usual sources, and forced to buy a cart full of flowers after receiving intel from Armstrong. Roy
ran into Major General Armstrong when she came to central. The two exchanged their usual 'pleasantries', and Roy acknowledged that there are good florists there; informing her he had gotten the message. He and Riza met in the mess hall. Although it might seem like they had a normal conversation, Riza actually passed information on to Roy through code, telling him that Selim Bradley is a homunculus too. Havoc would receive and pass on a note from Riza to Roy as well. Roy made a visit to see Armstrong and gave her flowers. A note telling her that Selim was a homunculus too was attached to them, and he told her that hyacinth means feminine grace and beauty so that she could have an excuse to throw them in the fire. Selim is confirmed to be a homunculus. Roy was given pictures from his foster mother Chris Mustang (Madame Christmas) of Selim over 50 years old, confirming that he has not aged a day.

Fuhrer and Selim went missing as their train was blown up, either a chance of a lifetime or a trap, Roy thought, and went into action. He faked kidnapping the Fuhrer's wife, and she would eventually see that her husband had forsaken her, not knowing that he was missing. With Mustang, Hawkeye, Breda and Fuery, they take her and invade central, getting reinforcements as they went along. Although they injure everyone who stood up against them, but do not kill anyone. Men from the North join, having been snuck in while they were reconstructing Armstrong’s house. Old faces, Rebecca and Ross joined in as well, with more ammo and reinforcements shipped via Havoc.

Roy, along with Riza, encountered Ed and Scar as they fought the immortal army creatures. Making a 'grand entrance', Roy made short work of the creatures with his flames. Envy would run into the group, and Roy learned the truth about his friend's death. Asking who killed Maes Hughes, Envy jested at first, but eventually replied that he was the one and showed them how he could morph. That was all Roy needed to know, and he stared his campaign of revenge against Envy. Envy initially underestimated Roy's attacks, but would soon learn the force of them, and attempted to flee. Roy though would move ot hunt him down.

It would be Riza who found Envy first, and she started to shoot him. He trapped her though and stated he would bring her piece by piece back to Roy. It was at this point that Roy found Envy, and once more let his flames do the work. Roy became consumed by his hatred, telling his Lieutenant to stand back and he would finish the job off. Envy was forced from his body and popped out in his worm-like state. Stepping on him, Roy was going to finish off the job, but Riza pointed a gun to his head. Ordering her to drop his gun, Ed arrived and snatched Envy away. Roy ordered then threatened Ed to give him back, but Ed refused. Roy wanted to see Envy die a painful and humiliating death; even stating he would burn off Ed's arm to get at Envy. Ed though still refused. He pointed out that Roy's goal was to lead a country and how was he supposed to do that looking like that? Would he be little more than an animal, Scar asked?

It was Riza who told the Colonel that she would kill him and that he should leave it to her. What he was doing wasn't to help anyone but only feed his desire for revenge. Roy thought told her to shoot, asking what she would do when he was dead. It was Riza's reply that would snap Roy out of it, and he blasted the wall instead of Envy. He stated that it was unacceptable, for he wouldn't lose her too, that the situation was messed up when he let a child anger him and an enemy lecture him. He apologized, before slumping down. Envy wasn't happy with situation, and tried to egg them on to kill him. It would be Ed who would pity Envy and see through him, but Envy committed suicide, with Roy calling him a cruel bastard for doing it.

[abilities]:
Roy is a powerful alchemist, dubbed “The Flame Alchemist" due to his creation of fire, although he really should be called the 'Oxygen Alchemist' because of how his powers work. He manipulates oxygen to create a path in order to make the fire go where he wants too. In scientific terms, he is splitting apart a water molecule for its hydrogen and its oxygen.

He wears gloves that have his transmutation circle on them, which are fire elements. They are created from a pyrotex cloth that makes sparks when he rubs his fingers together. The size of the flame is controlled by him, for he can use the oxygen in the area to his will, either creating a big bang, or a small line of fire. Roy is considered to useless in rain or in water, though that is not 100% accurate. He is only useless because when his gloves get wet he can no longer make a spark.

As shown in his fight with Lust, it simply depends on the hydrogen levels in the room. As well, he does require a transmutation circle for his powers, but he can improvise if his gloves are destroyed. He used his own flesh to carve his circle onto his hands, and because he did not have the gloves that made the spark, he used a lighter. It could actually be stated that Roy is deadlier in rainy weather as there is a higher concentration of water, although in theory it would likely be harder for Roy to control such a big reaction. It can also be noted that Roy fights with both hands, doing both long ranged attack and short ranged attacks.

So, to put it simply, he creates fire by snapping his fingers, adjusting the oxygen using alchemic transmutation and then boom..
