I posted this entry as a comment to another entry below, but saw too late that the entry was quite old, so I decided to post it again as a stand-alone entry...So, without any further ado

He didn´t know the prophecy was referring to Lily and Harry.
As far as I know, he only heard parts of it, and it could have referred to others, as well. I believe he wanted to prove himself to Voldemort, and thus was happy to bring him some new information. That this information could kill somebody, was irrelevant at that moment (or he didn´t want to think about that).
I disagree with that. He would have known that J&L had just has a whelp, and said whelp would have conformed to the description. As for him not realising that the information could kill someone, I'd disagree there as well. He's smart enough enough to know exactly what would happen.
I didn´t mean that he would not realize that his information could kill - he was just "in denial" about that. Perhaps he didn´t want to think about it.
And I´m not so sure that he was aware that Lily had a "whelp". Or that he knew the prophecy would fit their description...
I´m desperately trying to find the pages in the books where Dumbledore said something about the eavesdropper on his conversation with Prof. Trelawney, and where Trelawney told Harry that Snape was the said eavesdropper, in order to find out just how much he was able to hear - but I haven´t found them yet.
He didn't know that James and Lily had just had a whelp, as you put it. Harry had not been born yet; neither had Neville, and it's quite possible no one even knew they were pregnant. It's also very possible that Snape thought this was safe information to pass on, because it *wouldn't* hurt anyone except Voldemort. (See Jodel at the Red Hen website for this one). In any case, whether he loved her or not, he couldn't posssibly have known that Lily would have been endangered by this prophecy.
Er... I didn´t say something about a "whelp"!? But I think there must be another post, one that was a comment on MY comment. It must have been deleted. Anyway, I agree with you. And if he didn´t know that Lily was pregnant, he would feel all the more guilty when he realized that the prophecy fitted her description.
No, it wasn't you - sorry! It was Crystalwrenn, and I found the term rather shocking. I don't think even Snape would think that way about a baby, especially the baby of a girl he may have loved.

But as to Snape being in love with Lily, there are numerous hints. You can look them up here: http://www.half-bloodprince.org/snape_halfbloodprince.php
Look under "Flight of the Prince".
