Yesterday was a bad day for me, and normally I try to take comments more in stride. But to *whisper loudly* to make sure I was overheard was just ridiculous and my breaking point.
Today, I am looking at it more level-headed, and from this perspective I feel more sorry for the woman that she is so closed-minded.
I'm totally the sort who would've been a bad example. I would've turned around and gone, "I'm sorry, did you have something to say about me and my parenting skills with my autistic, special-needs child? Do you do a better job with yours? I would LOVE to hear how you handle it when the mood swings he can't help annoy stuck-up people in stores."
Course, I've got a short fuse about things like this. So kudos to you for not making a scene worse.
My fuse is pretty short, but I've learned quickly (and unfortunately) that if you bring up bad behavior to someone's face, you occassionally get even worse comments said to you, in front of your child. (Awful, I know).
It seems like Autism is the one gray area where people think that because your child *looks* normal, you, as a mother are doing something wrong and that gives the other person free reign to say something.
It has taken almost two years to bite my tongue, and vent online instead. But if I felt like saying somethin would do good, I have on occassion and enlightened the person.
But what you said is what I totally wish I could do most of the time :)

You're so right. People are VERY quick to judge... and to voice their unwanted opinions.
I'm sorry you had to deal with that. I'd like to punch that person for you. I'm a bit of an angry mommy tonight, so I'd probably do it.
*more hugs*
