Ah, poor Severus. This must have been one of the lowest points in his life. You do a brisk and brutal job of taking us through every instance in which he's stripped of the people and things that matter to him. His eventual discovery of the blanket is poignant; after everything else, it would be tremendously painful to learn, too late, that his arrival in the world had once been anticipated with love. At least the blanket provides the emotional shock he needs to be able to cry for everything he's lost. Small consolation, but perhaps keeping the blanket at Hogwarts will be a reminder in the bleak days to come that he was once loved.
