A moving and sadly believable story; Severus's thoughts ring true. I like the image of the protective alcove sheltering him all these years.

Pettigrew was supposed to have died in the confrontation with Black, but Azkaban was supposed to be secure, and where was Black, after all?
Excellent point.

Bittersweet, indeed. The charmed Magic 8 Ball is hilarious (Dumbledore's twinkle says YES, bwahahahaaa!), and the childhood memories are so touching:

They had maintained their old ways in the beginning - when they'd been small enough to fit into the alcove at the same time

I can close my eyes and picture the two little ones, sharing secrets and laughter, safe in their hidden place. And to end with the doe and his grief for his lost friend... it's a feeling we can all share, the ache of loss for something precious we can never regain. Beautifully done.

I’m not crying. You’re crying! Very bittersweet but yet hopeful. Thank you.

Love the wizarding versions of the 8-Ball predictions!

This is such a gentle and touching story. Severus has always struck me as a lonely character, and this moment on the eve of his 34th birthday certainly paints a sorrowful picture. Still, there are many lovely details here: Severus retreating to the alcove to be alone with his memories, the magic 8-ball's preservation of Lily's humor, the fact that Severus may hate Remus but doesn't blame him for the werewolf incident, Severus tempting himself with thoughts of running away. But this ritual strikes me as an attempt to keep the flame of Lily's memory alive. Of course, Severus is often accused of being "creepy" in his obsession with Lily, but here it's shown as mourning the loss of someone irreplaceable in his impoverished emotional life. No one else was ever a friend to him the way Lily was. Even now, she represents a light within his dreary days ( ... )
