Snape's invading mind rippled in pursuit... what great imagery here!

...the viper in the walled garden... and how apt because he’s “trapped” in his role. Quite clever!

Snape’s double-speak is delicious here: “I have one vow left that I am sworn to honour in this life, and it is to that master I remain faithful."

"That monster, you mean," she said, unable to help herself.

"If you say so," Severus murmured, smiling ironically. HAHAHAHHAHAA. And it earned a smile even!

And then again here: ...”Trust me, whether I lose or not, our side will prevail."

Oh this was difficult to read but only because my sensation heart hates thinking about this year where Severus was truly alone... it’s so poignantly written here. You did an excellent job, MA. You broke my heart, of course, but you did so beautifully.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the fic and persevered despite the rather bleak subject matter. I've always wanted to write a story set during this year, to reflect what it must have been like for Severus and to explore how his former colleagues perceived him. And I imagine Severus wouldn't have been able to resist the temptation, or perhaps the need, to say things whose deeper meanings would only become clear later, to ensure that the people he'd apparently betrayed would call his words to mind in the aftermath and realize that he'd deliberately left clues about his true loyalties.

Thank you for letting me break your heart. I can't say I'm sorry, because I did want this fic to hurt; what Albus asked of Severus took not only courage but extraordinary powers of endurance. And thank you also for the lovely feedback.

Incredible story. Your descriptive imagery of clothing texture, atmosphere, emotions, everything! captured me and kept me reading. It's heartbreaking to know that Severus was so truly, truly all alone. I had half-hoped that somehow he would confide in Minerva. It's obvious he sought her out for comfort, even though he had to manipulate the situation and make it seem otherwise. My heart breaks for him.

Thank you so much! I'm delighted the story was able to cast a spell. I find Severus' horrible predicament during that year unbearably lonely to contemplate, especially since he died with no reconciliations and never received any words of gratitude or forgiveness; but it's also irresistible to me as a writer, considering I tilt toward the angsty side of things. In my view, the 'relationship' with Minerva helped to sustain him, but it left a lot of pain in its wake. I apologize for the heartbreak, but I'm so pleased to know the story touched you.

This is one of the best stories I have ever written MA. It isn't always easy to read, because you place us there in the moment with her, and every emotion she experiences is etched into our hearts.

Your prose is absolutely poetic; I am a sucker for a beautifully written line, and this is chock full of gems. Thank you for sharing. This one will stay with me for a long, long time.

Aw, Teddy, thank you so much for the extremely high praise. I tend to wallow in sensory details and do a lot of overexplaining of emotional content, so when I write a story like this it can bring out all my self-indulgence as a writer. I'm relieved it worked in this case, and I'm incredibly touched that you liked it so much and that you found the prose beautiful. Your marvelous reaction makes me want to take this fic further and turn it into something more.

I should have KNOWN it was you! I have admired your work for so many years, and thrilled to your poetic phrases. What you call over-indulgence I call sheer beauty. I would love to see you take this even further - with your confidence, deft touch, it will probably slay me, but I'd die happily.

Darling, if that is wallowing and overexplaining, you just go right ahead. Seems like every time you wallow and overexplain, a new classic fanfic is born.
