Oh, he most certainly deserves that drink. Poor Severus. This was a very visceral story for me. Wow.

Severus needs what comfort he can find... at that point in life, there is nothing but bleakness in the role he has become forced to play.

I do think that year would have been the most horrid year of a somewhat bleak life... the role he was forced into at that point left him no friends (in spite of Minerva's effort to try!) and only enemies.

You’ve captured the heart of that year for him. I’m not sure how he survived it. From the opening of this, with his certainty that nothing nice would ever happen to him again, to the end, where he’s just so very tired, the evidence that he knew his life was forfeit is simply heartbreaking.

Yes, Severus would have already known this year would be bad, but I suspect it exceeded even his (low) expectations. It would have been a horrid year with no respite.
