"So really," Gerard is saying. "Really, gender is just this whole... illusion, you know? Like, you're attracted to someone physically at first, maybe, but ultimately you fall for who someone is, as in, the person. Not the gender."
He's totally sincere and earnest as he says this, wide eyes and wide, sweeping hand gestures between the sentences, and he offers a pleased little grin when Pete nods understandingly. And -- okay, Pete gets it, he does, and he thinks it's great that there are guys like Gerard who are making it easier for other kids to figure out what's going on with them, it's just.
It's just that Pete already knows what's going on with him. He's talking to Gerard because of what's going on with him, in fact: really, he's only here because lately, he mostly just wants to nail Gerard's brother.
Pete totally gets what Gerard is saying, of course. It's just Gerard is kind of the paradigm of bisexuality, all about the rights and how it's natural, how it's a beautiful way of expressing human nature.
Pete, on the other hand, just... Pete just sort of really likes sex, and doesn't discriminate over who helps him deal with this fact.

Pete first saw Mikey Way as just another skinny kid with glasses who was in the library like, every time Pete went in there. Then he saw Mikey at the after party of some college band's show, hanging out with the band, beer in one hand and the other on the singer's waist, fingers curled just slightly into his shirt.
After that, Mikey isn't so much the weird, bookish brother of that one Gerard guy obsessed with gay rights and equalities as the kind of hot kind of intriguing guy who knows a fuck loads of pretty awesome bands.
Pete likes the way Mikey's a bit like these two different people all rolled into one. It's a little like how he feels sometimes.
That and the fact that Mikey Way, behind his studying and his odd hair, is sort of totally smoking hot.
*
The problem is, Mikey seems just a tiny bit wary when Pete speaks to him for the first time, as though he's trying to figure out why. Pete figures that maybe he came on a little strong (which -- "I saw you all over Gabe after his show, I was pretty jealous of him, really" -- okay, point) and so he changes tack. He talks to Mikey about music, books -- because studies aside, Mikey has great taste in writing -- and he becomes his friend.
Working his way there from the inside, Pete sometimes thinks, and then has to make up something quickly when Mikey asks what's so funny.
The other problem is that half the time, Mikey seems to be miles away. It's not a bad thing or anything, it's actually one of the things that Pete likes about him, but it does mean he drifts off sometimes when Pete would rather he didn't.
Point is, Mikey's kind of annoyingly oblivious to the fact that Pete, by now, has what might just be the world's hugest crush on him. It has, surprisingly enough for Pete, even gone past the point where he only wants to get into Mikey's pants.
This is where Gerard and all his gay rights shenanigans comes in.

As well as being the resident sexuality expert, Gerard's also an art major. This means that after he hears and strategically nods his way through a long speech about shattering stereotypes and the evils of homophobia, Pete walks away with what he really wanted to get out of the whole experience: a rather large, exquisitely rainbow coloured, ridiculously unmissable sticker flag to put in his room.
It goes above his bed, in plain view to anyone who sits on it, and then he texts Mikey and tells him that he's bored, that Mikey needs to come hang out for a while.

Pete can tell by the way Mikey blinks in a slightly more startled way than usual at the rainbow patch above Pete's headboard, as he sits on the bed with one of Pete's headphones in his ear, that he's spotted it, but he doesn't say anything about it.
Pete has the other earphone in his own ear, and he scrolls through his iPod and puts a Queen song on. Just in case he it wasn't obvious enough, yet.
Mikey smiles and says, "God, Gerard loves Queen, you should share music with him or something.
Pete quickly changes tracks, because Mikey talking about his brother is bound to be a bit of a mood killer (that is, you know. Should the mood decide to ever finally take hold.)
Mikey raises an eyebrow at him. "Sex on the Beach?" he asks, sounding slightly horrified but smiling, eyes crinkling in the corners; Pete's totally all set to do some quick thinking to explain away his -- at times, only at times -- somewhat embarrassing musical taste, but in the end, just shrugs and grins at Mikey.
"Well we're not on a beach, but hey," he says, and Mikey's eyes widen a little behind his glasses, flicking to the rainbow flag again and then back at Pete's face, as a blush creeps its way slowly across his cheeks. Pete thinks that he's maybe finally been obvious enough for Mikey to realise what's been going on this whole time.
"Uh. What?" Mikey says, but he's smiling and not getting up and rushing out of the room and away from Pete, so Pete takes that as a sign and grins even more widely back, yanks the headphones out of their ears and out of the way, moves forward quickly, wasting no more time, and kisses him.
Just in case -- just in case Mikey is still not getting it, after a few minutes, he shoves his hand down Mikey's pants as well. To be sure, and all that. And because, seriously.
Mikey Way. Smoking hot.

The next day Gerard gets back to his room and is understandably surprised to find a brand new tin of multicoloured water colour paints sat innocently on his bed. He reads the note attached to them: thanks for the flag/sticker, saved my life! -- p xoxo
For a moment or two he wonders how someone got into his room to leave this for him in the first place, since he's pretty sure Mikey's the only person who actually has a spare key and his roommate, Frank, just shrugs at him when Gerard asks him about it, but he stops wondering after a while and decides to just go with it.
After all, this just shows: he's clearly been a major help to someone. Saving their life, by enlightening them about sexual freedom -- that, ultimately, is pretty much all he's ever been trying to do here.
