Fanmixes: The Chronicles of Narnia, Susan and Lucy Pevensie

Feb 07, 2011 20:06

Here are two fanmixes, inspired by Susan and Lucy Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia, for halfamoon 2011.

Oh, Susan <3. You guys know I love her, right? I have to admit, she's my all-time favorite Narnian lady. She's the Gentle Queen and she's still a badass with a bow! She's practical and a total big sister, and sorry, but those are not bad things! She grows up to be the Helen of Troy of Narnia! She doesn't want to hurt Trumpkin's feelings, but she's not going to let him win an archery contest! She gets to ride on Aslan's back, not once, but twice! She dances with Maenads at a Bacchanal! She goes to America in the middle of WWII for a holiday, and she likes lipstick... wait. One of the biggest literary disappointments of my life was reading The Last Battle at age 8, and finding out Susan's fate. I have maybe spent all the years since trying to reason that out. Fandom has been quite helpful, thanks fandom. :D

And Lucy! I love Lucy almost as much as Susan, and maybe to this day am still a little jealous of her, because she got to travel to the end of the world on the Dawn Treader and that hands down beats any vacation I ever got to go on. The Valiant Queen, with her healing cordial (and how handy is that?), who rode to the wars, and was Aslan's favorite, and who discovered Narnia first and never stopped believing, even when her jerkface brother made her out to be a liar.

These are two mixes I made, one for each of them, that follow their lives over the course of their stories, on both sides of the wardrobe. Oh, and a couple of bonus songs. :D

Brave in My Beautiful Mistakes - A Susan Pevensie Fanmix
So, this starts with Susan's first time in Narnia, and her growing up into a queen there, continues through Prince Caspian and then goes on, with her living in this world and giving up Narnia, and then after The Last Battle, with her coping with the loss of her family, and learning to live without them, and her hope to see them again. I'm sure there are songs that are on everyone's Susan playlist, and I probably hit every one of those, but I think I got in some different ones too. Also, lots of Indigo Girls songs! I wouldn't have thought that at first, but so many of them seemed to fit Susan. It's a little depressing at points (and maybe she has a complicated relationship with Aslan), but I think it ends on a hopeful note, and that's how I like to think of Susan's life after the train crash.

All This Beauty by The Weepies
All this beauty
You might have to close your eyes
And slowly open wide

Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall
And everything around her is a silver pool of light
The people who surround her feel the benefit of it
It makes you calm
She holds you captivated in her palm

Hammer and a Nail by The Indigo Girls
But my life is more than a vision
The sweetest part is acting after making a decision
I started seeing the whole as a sum of its parts.

32 Flavors by Ani DiFranco
and god help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying back

Winter for A Year by Arcade Fire
So ends my yearlong romance
With radio towers and machines
Wasted all my prayers
That I can't remember my dreams

World Falls by The Indigo Girls
This world falls on me with dreams of immortality.
Everywhere I turn all the beauty just keeps shaking me.
Running - end - earth - swimming - edge - sea - laughing - under - starry sky
This world was meant for me

Near Wild Heaven by REM
And I always thought that it would make me smarter
But it's only made me harder
My heart thrown open wide
In this near wild heaven

After The Fall by October Project
The farther you run
The more you recall
The loss of your innocence
After the fall

Enough of Me by Melissa Etheridge
Ain't that enough
I held the world back for you
Ain't that enough
I loved you past the point of dying
Ain't that enough of me for you

I Have Lost My Dreams by Dar Williams
Stopped pretending,
happy ending,
everything I ever wanted,
stands in front of me

I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke
I'm too tired to listen
I'm too old to believe:
All these childish stories

Warning Sign by Coldplay
And the truth is
I miss you
Yeah the truth is
I miss you so
And I'm tired
I should not have let you go

In The Sun by Joseph Arthur
I know I would apologize if I could see your eyes
'Cause when you showed me myself I became someone else
But I was caught in between all you wish for and all you need

Never Die Young by Lori McKenna
And I am the one who will never die young
I am a martyr and I cannot hide
But I'm not a winner, I am just brilliantly bitter
I'm sealed by my skin but broken inside

Other Side of the World by KT Tunstall
Over the sea and far away
She's waiting like an iceberg
Waiting to change
But she's cold inside
She wants to be like the water

Life Is Short by Butterfly Boucher
Oh I am young but I have a past
Travelled far to find the start
Yes I am scared and I've been burnt
But life is short

Crystal Ball by Pink
Oh, I've felt that fire and I, I've been burned
But I wouldn't trade the pain for what I've learned

Watershed by The Indigo Girls
Up on the watershed, standing at the fork in the road
You can stand there and agonize
Till your agony's your heaviest load.
You'll never fly as the crow flies, get used to a country mile.
When you're learning to face the path at your pace
Every choice is worth your while.

Blackbird by Doves
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise

Bonus Track:
Four Winds by The Killers
She's standing in the ashes at the end of the world
Four winds blowing through her hair
This song didn't really fit in the mix, but something about those lines always makes me think of Susan.

charmed life - A Lucy Pevensie Fanmix
Pretty much the same idea as previous, start with LWW, and keep going. Lucy's mix of course covers The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and is quite a bit more upbeat than Susan's, but it's got a few sad spots, when Lucy misses Narnia and Aslan, and when she realizes that Susan has turned away from Narnia. I always thought Lucy's was a life filled with wonder and adventure and brave leaps of faith, and I think these songs fit her well. And there's a lot of Aslan in here - he's so important to Lucy that he kept creeping into the songs. Again, I'm sure some of these are familiar Lucy songs, but, no Indigo Girls on this one. :D

New Soul by Yael Naim
I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world

Wunderkind by Alanis Morrisette
I am a magnet for all kinds of deeper wonderment
I am a wunderkind

Just a Little Girl by Amy Studt
You say I’m just a little girl, just a little girl
How can I compare? What do I know? What have I got to share?
But there’s nothing in this world, nothing in this world
That could hold me down, can’t you hear me?

Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys
You climbed on the ladder
And you know how it feels
To get too high, too far, too soon
You saw the whole of the moon

Little Wonders by Rob Thomas
Our lives are made
in these small hours
these little wonders,
these twists & turns of fate

Wildflowers by Tom Petty
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours

Hometown Glory by Adele
Ooh the people I've met
Are the wonders of my world

Glitter in the Air by Pink
Have you ever wished for an endless night?
Lassoed the moon and the stars and pulled that rope tight?
Have you ever held your breath and asked yourself will it ever get better than tonight?

He Came to Meet Me by Hem
Sometimes the only thought
That kept me in the night
Was one that I forgot
In summer's blinding light

Bonus Track:
Rainbows in the Dark by Tilly and the Wall
Sometimes you just can't hold back the river
Again, it doesn't fit in the mix, but something about this song just says Lucy to me.
