This. Was. AMAZING. I just... okay. I'm not fond of what-if fics, mostly, but the way you did this was so... real. The set-up, the parallels drawn with the canon, the DIFFERENCES highlighted. Oh, god, and Itachi, so present yet so very very dead. I love the progression here, the sense of so much time going by, the way they grow and develop and yet remain so so ignorant of what they need to know and then it all EXPLODES in the most painful way possible and, GUH.

They take to the trees for a little while until Naruto nearly gets clocked by a falling branch and Kakashi-sensei determines that it’s safer on the ground, and so they squash slowly on until daylight.

You know I could have picked something MEANINGFUL, but, no, this is the sentence that made me laugh out loud. THEY SQUASHED ON.... idk /lame

“He died because he had to choose between duty and love,” Danzou says.
GUH.

I freaking ADORED this. I'm SO wary of alternate reality fics, because when they're done poorly they're just AWFUL. But THIS. THIS ROCKED. From the kickass plot to the characterization to the complicated politics of the village...just so well-written and fantastic. YAY YOU...whoever you are.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING FICS IN THE HISTORY OF EVER

I have always, always, ALWAYS wanted to read a fic with this plot - in other words, that Itachi never killed the clan. Him dying instead was something I hadn't expected at all, but OMG, this was SO BRILLIANT.

Sasuke growing up stronger and weaker all at once, both fake and real friends with Naruto - but getting SMART in the end, throwing off the manipulation and doing what HE believes in and SAVING HIS FRIENDS and AHHHH WHY IS CANON SASUKE NOT THIS SMART. D8

Loved all the effort to rewrite the story again, and you made every piece fit properly! I'm impressed. Everyone was kept in character with his reasons and goals, and yuo covered some gaps canon has, like the before academy days. I suspected that Sasuke would be eventually brought in Itachi's same position, but the more I read, the more I got glued to the story until it got unpredictable. Amazing.
