Title: Correspondence

Summary: Sasuke and Naruto meet and somewhere along the line, rivalry becomes something more. A tale told in letters, emails and texts.
Warnings: Naruto goes on handful of dates with girls. Vague hints of KakaIru.
A/N: I tried something a little different here (and I don’t know if it worked or not) but I had a lot of fun trying regardless! Please forgive me for not using proper “text speak” I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Also, I kept trying to get this to be smutty but it just wasn’t working D: My deepest apologies, sunshee!

Dear Jiraiya,
You said that it was ok for my to send you letters, so I hope you don’t mind me sending you one now. (I can’t believe that you and Auntie don’t have email! That’s so crazy!) I had a lot of fun working with you this summer and, I don’t know, you’re a pretty cool guy even if you’re really old. And, well, I thought that maybe you could help me out because you know a lot of ladies and stuff and I’m hoping to get a girlfriend this year.
Anyway, school started and I’ve been going every day, even though most of my classes are so boring I keep falling asleep! My homeroom teacher is pretty mean though. His name is Mr. Shugo and he’s a little intense. He makes Iruka look like a kitten! He’s already punished one of my friends for talking when we were supposed to be quiet.
Luckily, I’m in the same class as a bunch of my friends, so that makes things a lot more fun. There is this really cute girl in my class. Her name is Sakura and she’s so pretty I could stare at her for hours. I don’t think she likes me though, since I tried to talk to her and she just looked at me for a moment before flipping her hair and walking away with her friend. Am I doing something wrong? I only asked if she wanted to go to the Kung fu double feature that’s playing at the cinema this weekend. Was that a bad idea? Anyway, I’m hoping you can help me out, since you’ve had so many girlfriends and everything.
Oh, I also wanted to tell you that I cut a minute off of my run time and I’ve been doing the weight lifting regime you sent with me. I think it’s making a difference!

Thanks for writing me back. I’m sorry to hear that Auntie Tsunade kicked you out, I hope you guys have patched things up by now!
So you think that girls don’t like Kung fu? Auntie does, so I guess I thought that most girls would enjoy it too. Maybe it’s because Auntie is old. I tried asking her to a horror movie but she didn’t want to see that either. Maybe I should just try dinner.
You’ll never guess what happened last week at the dojo. I’d gone in to work with the little kids, you know, let them practice their moves on me and stuff like that. It’s a lot of fun. Anyway, near the end of the lesson this kid comes in, looking for Kakashi sensei. He looked really familiar to me, and by the time I’d led him back to the office, I had figured it out. We had gone to elementary school together and had been pretty good friends. Well, except that he was a bit of a spoiled brat. I hope he decides to join the dojo though, it would be cool to spar with him. Maybe we could become friends again!
Mr. Shugo gave me detention last week. Apparently you get in trouble for doodling on the desks. I don’t know how he knew it was me but he did and I spent an afternoon pulling weeds out in front of the school. It sucked. Iruka just said that maybe it would make me think before I defaced school property again. Iruka’s making me write him a letter of apology too. Ugh. Sometimes having a teacher for a foster father is really annoying.

Hi Jiraiya,
Hope things are going well with you. I’m glad that you and Auntie have worked things out and that you only had to make her dinner for a month to be forgiven.
Do you remember me mentioning Sasuke, the kid who showed up at the dojo, the one I’d known in elementary school? Well it turns out that he’s going to my school as well. I was really hoping that we’d be able to pick our friendship up right were it left off but it’s not turning out that way. I don’t know what his problem is, but he’s been a big jerk, really annoying. I mean, I don’t think I’ve done anything to make him mad.
Well, other than pushing him a lot during our sparring match.
But we had the best match, I think Kakashi sensei forgot about us because it just kept going on and on. It was pretty intense and it reminded me of working with you over the summer. I’ve definitely improved, by the way, because I could hold my own with him. He could always kick my ass when we were younger. It made me really happy to be on the same level as him. He was only ahead by a very little when Kakashi sensei called it.
Now if I could just get him to lighten up, it would be perfect. I’d really like to be friends with him again.
Asking Sakura out has turned out to be futile. I’m not ready to give up but ever since Sasuke showed up all the girls have their eyes glued to him. I don’t know what the big deal is. I guess he’s pretty handsome but he’s kind of lacking in the personality department. So strange, I don’t understand girls at all.
Kakashi sensei is having me come into the dojo every week now to train the little kids and he’s even throwing a bit of cash my way in payment. I’ve been saving it up in the hopes that Sakura will say “yes” to a date and I can take her out somewhere really nice. If she ever stops looking at Sasuke that is.

How are you? Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written, things have been busy with school and everything. I’ve been working part time at my favorite ramen shop so between that and judo I’ve been really busy.
We’re getting ready for the school festival; my class is doing a maid café but in reverse, you know, the boys dressing up like girls and the girls running the whole thing. We all had to get our dresses yesterday and it was a bit weird. I think I look all right though, not like some of the guys, who look totally hideous.
I’m really happy that Sasuke is not in my class though. I don’t think that I could handle him on top of everything else you know. He’d definitely be a big jerk about everything. I don’t think I’ve seen him smile or laugh since he came; he only looks serious or irritated. How boring.
Anyway, enough about the King Bastard. I’m still working on getting Sakura to go on a date with me. Her best friend is dating one of my friends, so I’m trying to get him to set up a group date so that I can hang out with her. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
Judo is going really well. Kakashi sensei has me going to a competition next month. I’ve been at the dojo a lot, just to train. Still helping sensei out too. It’s kind of weird, but I think my own form has improved since I’ve started working with the younger group.

So I had no idea that you knew Sasuke’s old judo sensei. That was really weird, he seems like he really hates you a lot. I thought Auntie Tsunade was going to take him down there for a moment.
Kakashi sensei must think I’m depressed about not beating Sasuke because he keeps trying to be really encouraging. I mean, obviously I’m bummed I lost, but I feel more challenged than anything. I’ll just have to work harder so he doesn’t beat me again.

I know that I usually write Uncle, but I thought that maybe you would be able to help me more with this. I don’t think Uncle would know what to say.
So we had the school festival you know (I’ve enclosed a picture too, since you said you wanted to see how we all looked). And the weirdest thing happened. I don’t know how to say it so I guess I’ll just say it. Sasuke kissed me during the festival. It was weird. There were a lot of guys (and girls) flirting with all of us, but I don’t think anyone else got kissed by a guy. Sasuke says that he was confused but I don’t know, that seems kind of silly. I think he was just being mean because I won the last time we sparred. Trying to undermine my masculinity or something.
I mean, I don’t think he’s gay…. I don’t know, maybe he really was confused. Someone said that he’d gotten a visit from his brother and that he seemed to be upset about it.
Anyway, I don’t know what to do about any of this. It’s just so strange. And please don’t tell Uncle, I’d rather just talk to you about this.

So I screwed up and got into a nasty fight with Sasuke at the dojo last week. I’ve already written a letter of apology to sensei. He seems so laid back but there are things that he just won’t tolerate. Guess fighting is one of them. Though punching Sasuke in the face was a really bad idea. (Which I knew when I did it but he was making me so angry I couldn’t help myself. I’m sure there will be a lesson in centering myself during competition in the near future….)
Did you ever fight with Orochimaru like that? Did he ever make you so angry that you couldn’t see straight? I don’t even remember what it was he was saying, just that it wasn’t very nice. I guess I let my temper get the best of me but he’s like a little ice prince these days.
He totally wasn’t like that as a kid. I wish I knew what to do to fix our friendship.
Also, I was talking with Iruka tonight, and I was wondering if I could come and see you and Auntie Tsunade again this summer. I’d like to work with you again, it really helped me out a lot, plus you guys are a lot of fun to hang out with.
Do you have any suggestions on how to deal with Sasuke? I just don’t know what to do and I don’t think that Kakashi sensei will let us not spar. I think he thinks it’s good for us. Ugh. Any advice would be awesome.

Things are going well here. School is the same as always, mostly boring with occasional moments of coolness. There are still a few good friends in my class this year too, which I think is pretty cool but our teacher seems to think otherwise. So far we’ve all gotten in trouble and it’s only the second week of classes! If I get detention again Iruka is going to kill me and dump me in the river (well, that’s what he said at least).
Sakura is still totally cute this year. She also still doesn’t like me. I took Auntie’s advice and I’m trying to giver her up. She’s still nice to look at though.
I don’t know where Sasuke is, he didn’t come back to school so all the girls are upset and complaining that there are no more cute boys to flirt with. I don’t know if he went somewhere or not, but I can’t find him anywhere around here.
Kakashi sensei sent me to his apartment a few days ago after he had missed a bunch of training sessions in a row. The whole place was dark and there didn’t seem to be anyone home. I left a note but so far no one has seen him. I wonder if he went back to train with that Orochimaru guy. Have you heard anything?
Still working with the little kids at the dojo, there are a few that seem to like training with me better than Kakashi sensei, which is pretty cool. One of them likes to say that he wants to be like me when he grows up. Did I ever tell you that when I was little?

Dear Tsunade,
Sorry to bother you, I’m sure you’ve got your hands full dealing with Uncle (has his ankle healed yet?) but I’ve got a problem and I don’t know who else to talk to. You helped out with the Sasuke thing last year, so I hope that you’ll have some good advice for me this year as well.
Basically, Sasuke has disappeared. All the rumors are saying that he’s off chasing after his brother, I don’t really know the whole story, but I kind of miss him. Which is weird, right, missing someone who wasn’t very nice or anything. But I had a lot of fun sparring with him at the dojo and, I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem the same without him.
I’ve been sliding notes under his door and sending him texts but so far no answer to either. I was worried for a while that he didn’t live there anymore but I ran into the landlord and he said that Sasuke was still paying rent. I wish he would come back, just so I could show him how much better I’ve become. Iruka says that I should want to improve for improvements sake, but I’d rather have someone to go up against, it’s way more motivating.
I guess what I’m asking is if it’s weird that I’m still so obsessed with Sasuke? Iruka and Kakashi sensei seem to think so but I wanted your opinion too. It’s not like I’m obsessed with him like I was with Sakura. I wanted to date her but I want to fight him. It’s so confusing…

Sasuke came back! Not to school but to the dojo. Went in for practice last night and there he was, all high and mighty like, but whatever. I was super glad to see him and I said so but he just glared at me.
Kakashi sensei had us spar and it was awesome. I’ve definitely improved since the last time we sparred. You should have seen the look on his face! It was awesome!
At one point when we were on the ground he told me to “stop fucking pestering me” and I said “I’ll stop pestering you when you stop being a jerk and start being a friend.” He look a little shocked when I said that and muttered something under his breath that I didn’t catch because he was trying to pin me at the time and I was trying to fight back but yeah I think I might still get through to him.

Not too much has been happening here. Yes, Sasuke came back, did Auntie tell you that? We’ve come to a sort of truce, I think, though I never know which Sasuke I’m going to get. Some days he’s almost fun and then other days he’s a total jerk. But whatever, I’m glad he’s back.
Kakashi sensei has been driving both of us really hard the last few weeks. I think he’s getting sick of us always making snarky comments at each other. Apparently he doesn’t enjoy our wit like we do.

I went on a date with a girl a couple of days ago. I thought it went pretty well but she seemed kind of bored. Maybe I need to talk about something other than judo. A bunch of girls at school found out that Sasuke was back in town, and now they’re pestering me. They all want me to bring him to school for some stupid event so they can see him. The girl who I went out with last night was almost begging me to bring him. It was the only time she seemed excited. Don’t think I’ll go on a date with her again.

Did I tell you that all the girls at my school were begging me to get Sasuke to come to the dance? Hope things are going well with you. I’m glad that you and Auntie have worked things out and that you only had to make her dinner for a month to be forgiven.
Do you remember me mentioning Sasuke, the kid who showed up at the dojo, the one I’d known in elementary school? Well it turns out that he’s going to my school as well. I was really hoping that we’d be able to pick our friendship up right were it left off but it’s not turning out that way. I don’t know what his problem is, but he’s been a big jerk, really annoying. I mean, I don’t think I’ve done anything to make him mad.
Well, other than pushing him a lot during our sparring match.
But we had the best match, I think Kakashi sensei forgot about us because it just kept going on and on. It was pretty intense and it reminded me of working with you over the summer. I’ve definitely improved, by the way, because I could hold my own with him. He could always kick my ass when we were younger. It made me really happy to be on the same level as him. He was only ahead by a very little when Kakashi sensei called it.
Now if I could just get him to lighten up, it would be perfect. I’d really like to be friends with him again.
Asking Sakura out has turned out to be futile. I’m not ready to give up but ever since Sasuke showed up all the girls have their eyes glued to him. I don’t know what the big deal is. How are you? Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve written, things have been busy with school and everything. I’ve been working part time at my favorite ramen shop so between that and judo I’ve been really busy.
We’re getting ready for the school festival; my class is doing a maid café but in reverse, you know, the boys dressing up like girls and the girls running the whole thing. He seems so laid back but there are things that he just won’t tolerate. Guess fighting is one of them. Though punching Sasuke in the face was a really bad idea. (Which I knew when I did it but he was making me so angry I couldn’t help myself. I’m sure there will be a lesson in centering myself during competition in the near future….)
Did you ever fight with Orochimaru like that? Did he ever make you so angry that you couldn’t see straight? I don’t even remember what it was he was saying, just that it wasn’t very nice. I guess I let my temper get the best of me but he’s like a little ice prince these days.
He totally wasn’t like that as a kid. I wish I knew what to do to fix our friendship.

Dear self,
I’m doing something bad. I’m going to pick Sasuke up for judo tomorrow and I totally plan on kissing him. I need to see. Kissing Hinata was ok but it was nothing like kissing Sasuke. Iruka’s always telling me to think things though, so that’s what I’m doing. It’s just a little experiment.
I’m so nervous I think I’m going to puke….

I think I’m in trouble - kissing Sasuke turned out to be way better than kissing Hinata. Kakashi sensei gave us a weird look when we walked in together, and when I got home Iruka asked me about it. I told him that we had just met up before going inside but I don’t think he believes me. I won’t lie, he’s good at sniffing out when I’m not telling the truth.
Sasuke and I are meeting up again tomorrow. Just for another experiment. Just in case.

Things are awesome here - Sasuke and I are really getting along great. We’ve been hanging out all the time lately. Sometimes sparring is tough, since we get along now, but Kakashi sensei still puts us through our paces. We are both improving a lot.
Konohamaru, the kid I mentioned before, he’s going to test for his next level soon and he wants me to be there to see it. I can’t wait to go cheer for him.
I can’t believe the school year is almost over. I’m ready to be done with it, only one more year to go. I can come and stay with you again this summer right? Would you mind if Sasuke came for a bit to visit too? I talk about you a lot and I really want you guys to meet. Let me know ‘k.
