This chapter is a good example of what's wrong with this book and others like it. It's not so much that the author didn't research the setting (though that is a problem), it's that the author wrote a really, really crappy book. Ms. Beatty can't be bothered to proofread her own writing and so can't be bothered to be consistent. She also continues

I've heard the expression "hard sledding". But only in connection with y'know, fur trapping, the lumber industry, dogsled racing and such.
