It's not until August, but I'm already beginning to think I'm out of my mind for going.  I mean, it's Worldcon!  The sci-fi convention!  And I'm going by myself.  And I'm going because I want to meet my favorite (living) sci-fi author.  Never mind that if I do meet her, I'll probably say something brilliant like "Blurbleglupflurbian."

But, at the ( Read more... )

Oh, I'm going. Even if I fret myself into premature gray hair by August.

I just haven't been to a con in ages, and...it's Worldcon.

When I stop hiding under my bed at the thought of going to Worldcon by myself.
You'll be okay. You'll be among friends, many of whom you haven't met yet.

I went to my first Worldcon in 1984, the weekend of my nineteenth birthday. That turned out to be the largest Worldcon ever held before or since (roughly twice the size we expect Denvention 3 to be). It was my first SF convention ever. And I had a great time. You probably will, too.

I'm sure I will. I'm just a bit of a worrywart sometimes. Perhaps I should see if they still need volunteers for anything...that's one way to make sure I meet people.

They will always need volunteers. They may not be good about communicating exactly what they need. (Most Worldcons are bad about this, so this is no specific criticism of Denvention Three.) If you don't hear back from anyone, don't let that discourage you. Turn up and volunteer on the day; there is always something that needs doing, and you're quite right that it's a good way to meet people.
