Brooks steps down

In a message to News International staff, News Corporation's chief executive in Europe James Murdoch hailed Ms Brooks as "one of the outstanding editors of her generation" who "can be proud of many accomplishments as an executive".

Wow, this really has been a complete shambles, hasn't it? If she'd gone a week ago they could have kept the paper and potentially the bid.

All this and Rupert Murdoch came out today to see to say they'd handled it really well.

How does (rightly or wrongly) bowing to public pressure to quit clear one's name?

I assumed he meant she was stepping down in order to have time to fight these scurilous accusations and thereby clear her name.
