Red, White and Little Boy Blue - Challenge Fic

 Rating: G.
Disclaimer: Ennis and Jack were created by Annie Proulx. All laud and honour go to her.
Summary: This is a canon one-shot from Lureen's POV, and comes with a Dead!Jack warning. However, the angst level is the same as my earlier one-shot Just For You so if you were able to handle that you're probably okay with this.

Thanks: As always to ( Read more... )

This was absolutely gorgeous! You used so many lovely turns of phrases, and captures so well, I think, Lureen's unstated sense of emotion. I am in love with this piece!

Holy crap, Jess. Seems ironic to respond to such a lovely comment with fangurl lameness. * Deep cleansing breath.* I'm so glad you liked this, your opinion means a great deal. You're a class act all the way, Jess. Don't let anyone tell you different. - Em

Gaah *fangirls you back* Are you fangirling me? Squee! Thanks for the lovely note, though. I try to just be myself and be honest. I'm not perfect and I make mistakes, but I don't lie about them, I at least take responsibility. That's why having people relentlessly accuse of things I haven't done drives me rather crazy. If I'd done them, I would say so! I'm not very proud or anything.

Aaaaanyway. Yes. Keep writing :)

Thanks. I actually have no idea what's going on half the time. I can only judge (I cringe at that word) people by their words and deeds. From what I see, you're not about pretenses, which gets an A+ from me. Plus I love your sig line over at DC and the song it comes from.

Aaaanyway, thanks for the encouragement. Means a lot. xx Em

what an interesting take on jack's memorial service, as well as the telephone conversation!

"...awash in blue." lovely... when reading your words, the scenes from the movie flickered in my mind. you captured what was unsaid so poignantly.

"free to be all the colours he ever wanted to be."

double lovely. thank you.

Thanks, gnash. Glad you liked this. Such a short little snippet in the movie, but conveyed so much. Loved your comment. - Em

Lureen is trying to deal with Jack's death as best she can, but she can't get over the fact that she had lost Jack a very long time ago to this man on the other end of the phone line.

I think she did suspect that something was going on between Jack and his "fishin' buddy" but she never confronted Jack with her suspicions. That wasn't Lureen's way.

Now, she was using all the self control she could muster in tying to console her nemisis, the man who had stolen her husband away from her long before the tire incident.

Good story. I like the way you incorporated the colors into the way she felt about Jack. : )

Hey Debra: Lovely comment. Thank you so much. You always put such thought in your comments. The character of Lureen "speaks" to me more than Alma ever did. Maybe it's the way AH portrayed her, that passive aggressive thing she had going on, that makes Lureen so fascinating to me. She's still talking to me so there might be more coming from her. Thanks again. - Em

I'm glad you pointed out about that doing their marriage over the phone thing. I think it's so powerful, although hearbreaking, that Ennis calls Lureen on the phone in this scene. Because it encapsulates so many images - Ennis calling Jack after the divorce then turning him away, Ennis calling Lureen on the phone after the postcard and ending any illusions (IMO) Lureen might have had. So this marriage that could have been done on the phone is irrevocably ended on the phone as well. Thanks for your comment, sweetie. xx Em
