***

At the age of 20, Yunho fell in love. It was in spring some years ago when Yunho saw this kid from Seoul. The news spread among the villagers that their rich neighbor’s handsome son was going to stay in the little town for a couple of weeks.

Yunho was intrigued.

For days, he kept walking past the huge mansion in hopes of a glimpse... to see the face everyone talked about. Numerous times he went home with a gloomy expression. Until that one fortunate day, to his surprise, the small entryway next to the humungous main gate was left unbolted.

As he was too curious to let it pass, Yunho pushed it open saying, “It wouldn’t hurt to take a peek.” He was young and careless. Whatever he thought his heart wanted… it should get.

With careful steps, he sneakily walked through the huge, beautiful garden. There, sitting next to an intricate fountain, was an equally stunning person.

Indeed, he was a beauty-head adorned with soft, jet-black hair, pale skin, and a face that held the most beautiful pair of eyes. He liked his lips, too.

He wondered how it felt like to kiss them.

“Hello.”

Looking a bit startled, the boy gazed back at him with inquisitive eyes. Deeming the young intruder as harmless, he smiled and nodded at him. “I know you.”

“You do?” Yunho asked in surprise. He looked like they were of the same age.

“Well, yes.” He stood from where he sat, and moved a few steps closer. “You’re that boy who keeps lurking around the front gate.”

Yunho’s face reddened, still having the courtesy to blush.

“If I may ask, why did you come?”

Yunho bit his lip. “I wanted to see how you look like.”

“Oh,” Jaejoong frowned. “But I’m nothing special.”

“I disagree,” Yunho grinned. “I think you are very special. Have you looked in a mirror lately?” It boggled him how the boy thought otherwise, because not only did he look even prettier up close, his voice was heavenly, too.

“Thank you… I guess.” His wide, mystifying eyes crinkled in delight at the unmistakable compliment. “What’s your name?”

“Yunho.” And on that day, he finally learned what the beauty was called.

“I’m Jaejoong.”

Even his name sounded special.

***

They were no longer strangers.

Within four weeks after that curious first encounter, they both came into mutual understanding that they liked each other… more than a little-if not too much.

I love you.

I love you too.

And with each passing day they spent closely together, the thought of going separate ways by the end of the month became more and more unbearable to the both of them.

Jaejoong begged and begged his father to let him stay. But it was already planned that he was to be sent to America where he would finish his studies and, in his father’s words, would become next in line to run their business empire.

Sadness consumed the both of them.

That afternoon, huddled together under an old tree, the two young men contemplated on how they would cope with the imminent separation. Hidden in a blanket of shadow, Yunho’s back was against the aged trunk while Jaejoong sat between his legs.

“What are we going to do, Yunho-yah?” Jaejoong softly asked. A rush of cool air was blowing on his face, making his dark hair sway beautifully.

“Run away with me.” He said, murmuring his words quite timidly. He caught the stray lock of hair in between his fingers and tucked them behind Jaejoong’s ears. “I’ll take care of you, Jaejoong-ah.”

That, he promised.

It only took seconds for Jaejoong to answer. The next day, at midnight, they met at the station and boarded the train to the city of Gwangju.

They’ve shared a couple of firsts that left a lasting impression. That first time they kissed each other goodnight, first time to hug the other when one was experiencing a bad dream, first time to wake up in bed next to each other, and of course, that first time they made love.

In between butterfly kisses, and giggles, they made more sweet promises and one of which was not to leave each other. The first few months were wonderful.

Yunho took multiple part-time jobs, earning enough to help pay rent and feed the both of them, while Jaejoong worked at this nice ahjumma’s small diner. His shift ended at 8pm. And from there, he would wait for Yunho to get back home, which was usually around midnight.

All that empty nights of waiting was bound to take its toll.

They had their first argument.

We barely see each other anymore!

Oh, I’m sorry that I’m working my ass off to feed you proper food! Would you rather starve then? God! Is that so hard to understand?

But as soon as tears leaked from Jaejoong’s eyes, Yunho would immediately reach for him and enclose him in a tight hug. He’d hold him tighter, until Jaejoong would hug back.

I’m sorry.

I love you so much.

Only that there were times when love wasn’t enough. The arguments became a never-ending cycle. And the problems between them just started to grow worse.

It came to the point where Yunho didn’t come home anymore. One day, two days, Jaejoong would wait. Most of the time, he’d spend the hours daydreaming of what he could become.

Jaejoong wanted to do a lot of things.

Before he met Yunho, he had dreams that he wanted to achieve. But every time it would cross his mind whether he regretted abandoning it all, it would always lead to a single definite answer.

Yunho was everything that he needed.

Except, he just wasn’t sure if he was everything that Yunho needed.

This isn’t working anymore.

W-What are you saying?

Let’s end this, Jaejoong-ah. Go back to your family.

Despite Jaejoong’s tears, Yunho didn’t move from his spot. Instead, he turned his back on him.

I gave up everything for you, Yunho-yah.

You made a mistake. I never asked you to.

Heartbroken, Jaejoong ran to their shared bedroom and started packing up his things. He walked out the door with his small bag in hand, leaving behind the memories, and the man who he willingly gave his heart to-only to crush it in front of him.

As soon as the door slammed shut, Yunho turned away and cried silently.

I love you. I’m sorry.

A week after Jaejoong left, Yunho was kicked out of the apartment. He’d failed to pay the two-month rent he’d promised his landlord because, unfortunately, he lost his two jobs a long time ago. It didn’t help that the only job he’d been able to hold down for the last month barely pay him enough to feed himself, and even with Jaejoong’s pay and his own salary combined, it was still small enough to get them through the whole month.

He remembered them arguing about taking multiple jobs. Yunho refused to let Jaejoong take another one because Yunho knew for himself how exhaustingly difficult it was to juggle between responsibilities. He thought, it was enough that he suffered for the both of them.

Every time Jaejoong offered to help, Yunho would keep the burden to himself and distract his lover with his lovely kisses and wonderful hugs.

We’re fine, Jaejoong-ah.

The days and nights he couldn’t spend at home with Jaejoong were used up on finding a proper job to improve their living condition, but despite the perseverance, no one wanted to take him in.

It just wasn’t enough.

It killed him every time he looked at Jaejoong and noticed how he’d gotten thinner, and paler compared to that first day he laid his eyes on him. He felt like he was to blame… he couldn’t keep his promise to take care of him.

Running off together was mistake. They were young and stupid, and didn’t consider how life was going to treat them badly.

He couldn’t, for the life of him, allow Jaejoong to suffer anymore. He had to push him away for a better life.

Now, not only was he homeless, he was empty in the inside. He’d been sleeping on the floor of the subway station for the past couple of days, and had used up all his money on food.

He opened his wallet, turning it upside down, but not a penny left for a single candy to appease his hunger. He sighed, and willed his mind to sleep.

A few minutes after he’d taken his small nap, he heard approaching footsteps. He opened his eyes to see a smug-looking, teenage guy peering down at him.

He started feeling up Yunho’s pants to check if he had anything on him.

“Hey! What are you-”

The kid pointed a knife at his face. “Shut up and give me your wallet!”

“I don’t have a wallet!” he reasoned.

“Don’t lie to me, you asshole! I saw you holding it earlier,” the kid insisted. He reached for Yunho’s pocket and as soon as he felt it, he dug deeper to fish it out. He was momentarily distracted that Yunho took the chance to grab the knife. They wrestled on the floor over it, but as Yunho was in a frail condition, the kid surprisingly took control and stabbed him on the side.

“Thought you could win over me, huh?” The kid spat at him. He reached for Yunho’s wallet and started walking away. But when he saw nothing in it, he scrunched his nose in disgust and made his way back to the slumped man on the floor.

“Fucker!” the kid threw it at him and then left.

Yunho groaned, holding his wound in pain. He weakly grabbed for his wallet and then folded it open. Inside was a photo of Jaejoong smiling brightly at him.

It wasn’t empty. It had his everything.

His vision then started to get blurry. The last thing he heard was an old lady calling out for him.

“Young man, are you alrigh-oh good Lord!” she gasped, seeing the blood pooling around him.

Yunho woke up to a sight of white-painted ceiling and plain, boring walls of a hospital room. His eyes squinted open, carefully allowing his vision to adjust to the brightness. He tried to sit up but his body was numb, and when he tried to move his hand… he realized that someone was holding it.

He turned his head to the side in confusion. When he saw who it was, he gripped the hand tighter, tears threatening to fall.

“Jaejoong-ah,” he choked.

He watched him slowly stir awake, and when those eyes met his, they snapped open in complete relief.

“You’re awake,” he whispered and lifted his free hand to cup Yunho’s cheek. His eyes were red-rimmed, and puffy from so much crying. Even his voice sounded much huskier than Yunho remembered.

“Y-You lost a lot of blood. I was so worried,” he said brokenly. “I went back to see you the other day hoping you’d take me back… but you weren’t there anymore. I didn’t know what to do,” he cried.

Yunho closed his eyes at the warm touch, tears sliding down the corner of his eyes. “How did you find me?”

“Ahjumma… the lady I work for, found you at the subway station,” he explained. “She was on her way to catch the train home when she recognized your face. She told me she’d seen you picking me up at work before.”

That night they fought, Jaejoong sneaked into the diner through the back door with his duplicate key expecting the place to be empty at that hour. But he was caught sleeping in the food storage by the owner. After he explained to the ahjumma what happened, she was thankfully kind enough to let Jaejoong stay with her.

“I’m so glad you’re okay.” Jaejoong’s tears fell some more. “I don’t know what I would do if… I shouldn’t have left.”

“Don’t blame yourself, Jaejoongie,” Yunho whispered. “It was never your fault. I’m so sorry I made you suffer all this time. I tried so hard to give you a better life, but…” Yunho spoke sadly. “You really should have gone back to Seoul, Jaejoong-ah. I know your family will understand.”

“I can’t go back. They’ll send me away,” Jaejoong shook his head. Careful not to prod the bandaged wound, he leaned forward, and pressed his face against Yunho’s chest. “We promised not to leave each other, didn’t we?”

“I know, Jaejoong-ah,” Yunho nodded weakly. “But is it enough? Look at me. I’m useless. I don’t have anything to give you.”

“You have everything to give… just stay with me,” he whispered. “You’re wonderful and I love everything about you. Don’t ever second-guess yourself like that.”

Didn’t they say true love is measured at times of difficulties?

Jaejoong inhaled softly, tipping his head up to kiss Yunho’s lips. “We can make it through together, just please, don’t shoulder the problems alone. That’s why I’m here, aren’t I? We promised to look out for each other.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” Yunho bit his lip in resignation and pulled Jaejoong to him. “I love you so much.”

“I never doubted. Even when you chased me away, you never said that you didn’t love me anymore,” Jaejoong smiled, embracing Yunho tightly.

I love you too, Yunho-yah.

2 years later

Jaejoong and Yunho now owned that little diner everyone loved to visit for its magnificent food and stunning, young cook. The wonderful ahjumma left it to their care after she died.

2 years ago, in that one fateful night at the hospital, she served as Yunho and Jaejoong’s guardian angel and took them in. As she didn’t have any families left, she treated them like her own sons and loved them just as much as they were fond of her. Naturally, when she’d gotten ill, she left her assets to the two young men who took wonderful care of her and brought color to her life.

“Jaejoong-hyuuung! Someone’s here to see yoouu!”

“I’m right here, Changmin.” Jaejoong glared at their regular customer who was stuffing his face with dessert. “You didn’t have to yell at my face!”

“Changmin, stop being disgusting,” Junsu grimaced.

“No, it’s the both of you who need to stop being disgusting,” he eyed his two other friends making googly eyes at each other.

“Don’t mind him, Junsu-yah. He’s just jealous,” Yoochun laughed.

“Jaejoong…”

His head shot up upon hearing the familiar voice. There stood at the doorway was an elderly man… someone he thought never cared for him.

“Appa,” he gasped.

With hurried steps, the man approached the stunned cook and wrapped his arms around him. “I’ve been looking all over for you. H-How have you been?”

Jaejoong couldn’t believe his father was there in front of him. That cold man he once knew was long gone. His wrinkled eyes radiated with warmth and longing.

Putting away all the past hurt behind him, Jaejoong hugged his father back and whispered, “I missed you too, appa.”

His father asked him to come back, but didn’t press on and respected Jaejoong’s decision to stay. Seeing how dejected the old man looked, he promised him he’d visit home when he’s ready and that seemed to put light back on his face.

He watched the door close behind his father, stared until the shadow of his old life disappeared. It wasn’t long until the door opened once again, revealing his Yunho with a bouquet of flowers on his hand.

And when Yunho smiled widely, there was not a single distrust in Jaejoong’s heart that Yunho also loved this new life with him.

“Jaejoongie!”

“You didn’t have to, Yunho-yah.” Jaejoong chuckled, ignoring Changmin who made gagging sounds next to a giggling Junsu and a pleased Yoochun.

“But I wanted to,” Yunho grinned, placing the flowers on the table. “Happy anniversary, love,” he whispered, leaning forward for a kiss.

“My surprise is at home.” Jaejoong winked playfully, delighting at the amused look on Yunho’s face.

It was just the beginning of many more years of happiness together.

And knowing that…

Yunho held Jaejoong closer. “I can't wait.”

He definitely looked forward to spending the rest of his lifetime with him.
